Ontario is moving to strengthen and standardize truck-driver training.

On **September 21, 2026**, the Ontario government announced a new standardized **entry-level training curriculum for Class A commercial truck drivers**. The proposed curriculum will contain **more than 103 hours of training** and is expected to begin implementation in early 2027. ([Ontario Newsroom][1])

Key changes include:

* **Standardized training:** Truck-driving schools across Ontario will have to follow a common curriculum.
* **More than 103 hours of training** for new Class A applicants.
* Possible additional training in **fatigue management, northern/rural/remote driving, human-trafficking awareness and mandatory air-brake training.
* **More oversight of truck-training schools**, following concerns raised by Ontario's Auditor General.

* From **January 1, 2027**, a new applicant must have held a **Class G or higher licence for at least six months** before attempting the Class A road test.

The government's stated objective is to produce better-trained commercial drivers and improve road safety, while creating more consistent training standards across Ontario.

Doug Ford recently spoke strongly against sending established foreign workers back to their home countries after they have built lives in Ontario.

On October 1, 2026, Ford criticized cases where foreign workers who had been working in Canada for years received letters telling them to leave. He described it as “the craziest thing I have ever heard”, particularly when workers had established families, children in Ontario schools, rented or purchased homes, and had been trained by Canadian employers.

His broader argument was that Canada/Ontario needs workers and that removing people who are already integrated into communities can create labour and population problems.

There is an important distinction, though: Ford has not said that every temporary foreign worker should automatically be allowed to stay permanently. In 2025, his government also emphasized that Ontario's priority should be helping young Ontarians fill available jobs rather than expanding access to temporary foreign workers.

Also, immigration status and deportation decisions are primarily under federal jurisdiction, not the Ontario government's. The current Canada–Ontario immigration agreement gives Ontario a role in recommending occupations and supporting foreign-worker protections, but it does not give the province unilateral control over who can remain in Canada.

10/03/2026

Canada is shifting toward a more controlled approach to immigration, focusing on balancing labour needs with infrastructure and housing capacity as we look ahead to the upcoming 2027–2029 levels plan. 🇨🇦📈⚖️

On September 29, 2026, Lena Metlege Diab announced new federal support for Francophone immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador.

* The federal government announced approximately $1.2 million for new projects supporting Francophone immigration and minority Francophone communities.
* Specifically for Newfoundland and Labrador, the province is receiving $349,684 over two years through the Francophone Immigration Support Program.
* The project will create a more sustainable pathway to attract French-speaking and bilingual workers from overseas, particularly for areas such as health care, education, and early childhood education.
* The stated objectives include helping with population growth, labor shortages, and the long-term development of Francophone communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Diab said the investment is intended to attract and retain Francophone and bilingual newcomers and strengthen Francophone communities outside Quebec.

This is funding for an immigration support project, not a $349,684 investment given directly to individual immigrants.

Doug Ford’s Ontario government has repeatedly said that Ontario has labour shortages and needs workers, particularly in areas such as skilled trades, construction, manufacturing, health care, and technology.

Ford said Ontario was tackling the province’s labour shortage through investments designed to train workers for in-demand sectors.

More recently, an Ontario government statement in March 2026 said: “At a time when Ontario needs workers, our government is stepping up to train them. At a time when employers need talent, our government is helping to deliver it.”

There is an important distinction, though: saying Ontario needs workers does not by itself mean Ford supports keeping every temporary foreign worker in Ontario or giving every TFW permanent residence. The statements are primarily about addressing specific labour shortages and developing Ontario's workforce.
