Your offer got accepted. Congratulations! But your lawyer's work is just getting started.

Between a firm deal and getting your keys, there's a title search, a Real Property Report review, lender instructions, and a Statement of Adjustments. Any one of them can delay your possession day if it's missed.

One of the most common surprises for buyers is that the deposit and the down payment are not the same payment.

Our latest blog walks through what actually happens from offer to possession: https://jaswal-law.ca/buying-home-alberta-lawyer/

Moving in together? Remarrying? Starting a business with a partner at home?

These are the moments Alberta couples usually wish they'd had this conversation sooner. A cohabitation agreement or prenup isn't about distrust - it's about knowing exactly where you stand before life gets complicated.

We walk through when this conversation actually matters, and what makes an agreement legally enforceable in Alberta.

"Custody," "guardianship," "parenting time" - parents use these words interchangeably. Alberta law doesn't.

Getting them mixed up is one of the most common sources of confusion (and conflict) we see between separated parents.

Our latest blog breaks down exactly what each term means, who it applies to, and why the difference actually matters for your parenting order.

"We're Separated. We Just Haven't Moved Out Yet." 🏠

Sound familiar? You're not alone - and in Alberta, you're not stuck either.

Separation isn't about your address. It's about intention and conduct. But if your separation date is ever disputed, courts weigh specific factors - and getting the details right early protects everything that comes after: your divorce timeline, your support, your property rights.

We walk through exactly what courts look for - and how to protect yourself - in this week's blog.

Navigating a separation under one roof? Let's talk through your situation.

Meet the Team Mondays!

We’d like to introduce Amran Warraich, the law student on our team. Amran’s path into law has spanned two countries - she was born in England, moved to Canada in 2012, and later returned to the UK to study, graduating with honours from the University of Leicester in 2025. Before that, she earned her Bachelor of Arts from Grant MacEwan University. She’s working through her NCA examinations on her way to becoming a lawyer.

Outside the office, Amran volunteers with the Edmonton Just-Us Girls Youth Criminal Justice Program and is a note taker with Edmonton Community Legal Centre. When she’s not studying or volunteering, she’s usually reading, working on her golf game, trying a new restaurant in Edmonton or spending time with her puppy Rolo.

We’re glad to have her growing with the firm!

"How long will my divorce actually take?"

It's the question almost every separating couple asks first - and the honest answer is that it depends more on you and your spouse than on the courts.

There's a minimum timeline set by law, a very different range if you agree on the big issues versus if you don't, and a common misconception about when your property actually gets divided that catches a lot of people off guard.

We break it all down in our latest blog on our website, or book a free 30-minute consultation to talk through your specific situation.

Canada Day is a wonderful time to slow down and celebrate everything we love about this country — and to spend it with the people who matter most. Our team will be doing the same, so our office will be closed Wednesday, July 1, reopening Thursday, July 2 at 8:30 am.

If you reach out while we’re away, we’ll get back to you just as soon as we return. Until then, from our family at Jaswal Law to yours — have a safe, happy, and restful Canada Day!

Planning a trip with your kids after separation? Before you book anything, there are a few things you need to know.

Travelling with children after separation isn't as simple as packing a bag. Whether it's a weekend road trip to Banff or a flight overseas to visit family, the rules around consent, parenting orders, and documentation can catch parents off guard.

Consent letters. Parenting orders. Passport rules. What happens if the other parent says no - and what to do if you're worried they won't bring the kids back.

We broke it all down in our latest blog post. Link in bio.
