Q: My landlord just told me that I can't keep my pet in my rental unit, do I have to get rid of them?

A: According to the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006, S.O. 2006, c. 17:

" “No pet” provisions void
14 A provision in a tenancy agreement prohibiting the presence of animals in or about the residential complex is void. 2006, c. 17, s. 14."

Short answer is no you do not have to get rid of your pet. That being said there are always exceptions to the rule so be sure to reach out to a legal professional for a personal consultation for accurate information relevant to your situation before you do anything.

Q: How long do I have to start a claim against someone in small claims court?

A: If you are the individual initiating the claim you are what is known as the "Plaintiff" and you are making a "Plaintiff's Claim". In most instances you have up to 2 years from the date you first learned about the problem to initiate a claim and begin proceedings.

If you are looking for assistance with your small claims matter be sure to seek a legal opinion from a legal professional or legal services provider before you file! The last thing you want is to lose your case because of a technicality that you could be unaware of.

We want to take this opportunity to thank our frontline and healthcare workers who have not stopped giving it their all for the last 2 years. We know this pandemic has been stressful for everyone but for these people it has been especially so. While there was always the long hours, the stressful environments, and little bit of sleep, adding this virus on top of everything else has shown just how important and critical these people are for our safety and well-being. If you know someone who has stepped up to the challenge and has been on the frontlines of this pandemic make sure to thank them- they deserve it.
