Statistics Canada reports an increase in international visitors entering Canada in March 2026

Statistics Canada has released new travel data for March 2026, showing an increase in international visitors. The total number of non-resident travellers entering Canada exceeded 1.6 million, marking a 4.7 percent increase over last year. Trips to Canada by United States residents rose by 4.4 percent to reach 1.3 million arrivals. Most American visitors travelled by automobile, and over half of those drove across the border for same-day trips. Overseas resident arrivals also increased by 5.6 percent, driven heavily by a surge in travellers from Europe. The United Kingdom, Mexico, and India remained the top three source countries for these overseas visitors.

Manitoba invests half a million dollars in English training for Ukrainian newcomers

The Manitoba Government is providing 500,000 dollars to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Manitoba Provincial Council. This new funding will expand English language training programs for Ukrainian newcomers. The investment helps families who sought refuge in the province build successful futures and find stable employment. Between July 2025 and February 2026, the organization delivered language training to nearly 900 adult learners. The provincial funding will help hire more program staff and expand course options in both rural and urban communities. This announcement coincided with Vyshyvanka Day, which celebrates Ukrainian culture and heritage across Canada.

Canada releases latest immigration application and citizenship processing data

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has released new data on its application inventory. The department made 112,600 permanent residence decisions between January and March of 2026. Canada also welcomed 83,000 new permanent residents and 285,500 new citizens from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. For temporary residents, officials finalized 106,800 study permit applications and extensions and processed 467,500 work permit applications and extensions during the same timeframe. These high processing volumes reflect the ongoing effort by the Federal Government to reduce overall wait times for applicants across all streams.

New research shows visa uncertainty affects international students looking at Canada

A new report by IDP Education shows that visa rules change how students choose their study destinations. Many international students now look at visa policies very early in their planning process. Canada remains a popular choice for global students. However, many applicants feel that the chances of obtaining a Canadian study visa are lower than in the past. Students are highly concerned about visa approval rates and processing costs. Tight rules are making some students choose other countries or cancel their study plans entirely. Experts say universities must share clear and accurate visa information to help students.

Ontario opens new exam centre to help skilled trades apprentices get certified faster

The Ontario Government has opened a new apprenticeship exam testing centre in Kenora to support the skilled trades sector in Northwestern Ontario. Previously, apprentices in this region had to travel five hours to Thunder Bay to write their final certification exams, facing high travel costs and scheduling delays. The new centre allows local tradespeople to test closer to home, complete their training quickly, and enter the workforce sooner. Over the next ten years, Northern Ontario will need more than 21,500 skilled trades workers. This expansion makes it easier for Canadians and new immigrants to fill these in-demand jobs and build stable careers.

Canadian refugee protection claims experience a dramatic decline as backlog begins to ease

Internal statistics from Canada's immigration departments highlight a major shift in the country's humanitarian landscape, as new monthly refugee protection claims dropped to a two-year low of 2,640 in April 2026. This represents a staggering reduction from the peak of nearly 20,000 claims recorded in July 2024. The sharp downward trend in intake has allowed the government to finally chip away at its massive inventory, lowering total pending cases to 293,075. However, the legal system remains under immense strain downstream, as secondary refugee and immigration appeals continue to climb, pushing pending appellate workloads to record heights this spring.

Americans pursuing Canadian citizenship face processing delays under interim measures

A group of American applicants are reporting significant delays and a lack of transparency regarding their Canadian citizenship-by-descent applications. Despite applying as soon as interim measures were introduced in March 2025, many early applicants have found their files stalled in the Immigration Department’s program support unit – a division typically reserved for complex cases. Meanwhile, newer applicants who submitted their files after the formalization of the "lost Canadians" legislation appear to be receiving certificates much more quickly. This perceived "first-in, last-out" processing has left many who have strong personal and professional ties to Canada in a state of legal limbo.

Immigrant integration services face budget cuts and eligibility gaps in Canada

A new assessment of Canada’s migrant integration landscape reveals significant strain as federal funding for the IRCC Settlement Program is projected to drop to $935.7 million by 2026-27. Despite a 70 percent budget growth since 2016, a government-wide expenditure review and reduced permanent resident targets are triggering widespread staff layoffs across service provider organizations. Particularly controversial is the decision to discontinue federal funding for language instruction above CLB level 4 starting in September 2026, a move that impacts a third of learners in Ontario.
