You need to go to one of the Legal Aid Botswana offices in Gaborone or Francistown, or anywhere where there are LAB offices. You need to bring your Omang, your payslip, if you are employed and any papers that have to do with your case, like your marriage certificate, birth certificates for your children, contracts, legal papers etc.The legal aid officer needs to see that you cannot afford a lawyer. He or she will ask you to state how much you earn and own. This is the Means Test. Only citizens of Botswana, who cannot afford a lawyer, qualify for legal aid. However, your case must have a reasonable chance of winning and you cannot refuse a reasonable settlement. OBJECTIVES OF LEGAL AID BOTSWANA. Every person is entitled to equality before the law. LAB, therefore endeavours, within its means, to balance the scales of justice in an independent and impartial manner. Its objective is to make legal aid available to indigent persons as widely as possible within its financial means.
