World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is celebrated on May 21st, a date established by the United Nations in 2002 to promote respect among cultures and encourage dialogue among peoples.

In a World Cup year, this reflection takes on even greater significance. More than just soccer, the competition brings together different countries, languages, traditions, and ways of celebrating, transforming the sport into a grand cultural gathering.

In the stands and beyond, millions of people share emotions, stories, and identities, demonstrating how cultural diversity has the power to connect the world across borders.

Na útlima segunda-feira, dia 18 de maio, a Receita Federal do Brasil iniciou a operação “Desvio de Rota”, que tem como alvos os lojistas do Shopping 25 de Março Brás e Stunt, ambos na da região do Brás. A operação tem como foco mercadorias contrabandeadas e descaminhadas que atenderiam o mercado local, incluindo produtos com a temática da Copa do Mundo. Até o momento foram apreendidos diversos produtos contrafeitos, entre camisas de times de futebol, tênis, acessórios, bolsas, perfumes, relógios, entre outros. O time de Anti-counterfeiting do escritório Garé IP está acompanhando a operação.

Os agentes da RFB, estimam uma operação com duração de 2 semanas, a fiscalização de 2.000 lojas e a apreensão de até R$ 300 milhões em produtos contrafeitos.

Last Monday, May 18th, the Brazilian Federal Revenue (RFB) launched Operation "Desvio de Rota", targeting shopkeepers at "Shopping 25 de Março Brás" and "Shopping Stunt", both located in the Brás region. The operation focuses on smuggled and contraband goods intended for the local market, including World Cup-themed products. So far, several counterfeit products have been seized, such as football jerseys, sneakers, accessories, bags, perfumes, and watches, among others. The Anti-counterfeiting team from Garé IP is accompanying the operation.

RFB agents estimate the operation will last two weeks, inspecting 2,000 stores and seizing up to BRL 300 million in counterfeit products.

We congratulate the Brazilian Federal Revenue on another massive operation.

A Lei n.º 9.279/1996 (LPI) completa 30 anos em 14 de maio, um marco significativo para a consolidação da propriedade industrial no Brasil. Durante esse tempo, houve progressos importantes na proteção de marcas e patentes, com mais segurança jurídica e convergência internacional.

Em contrapartida, o cenário atual revela desafios significativos, principalmente no que diz respeito à eficácia da repressão frente ao aumento exponencial das falsificações.

The Brazilian Industrial Property Law (LPI) marks its 30th anniversary on May 14, a significant milestone for the consolidation of industrial property in Brazil. Over this period, important progress has been made in the protection of trademarks and patents, with increased legal certainty and greater international convergence.

At the same time, the current landscape reveals significant challenges, particularly regarding the effectiveness of enforcement in the face of an exponential increase in counterfeiting.

A Organização Mundial da Propriedade Intelectual (WIPO) estabeleceu o dia 26 de abril como o Dia Mundial da PI. Para este ano, o tema escolhido foi "PI e os esportes: em suas marcas, preparar, inovar!”. Em um ano de grandes competições globais, a proposta é analisar a indústria esportiva sob a ótica da proteção e promoção de marcas, invenções e ativos intelectuais.

O setor esportivo envolve diversos ativos, desde o desenvolvimento técnico de produtos de performance até a identidade visual de clubes e federações. Diante da competitividade deste mercado, a gestão de PI torna-se um recurso importante para a estruturação de negócios e proteção de investimentos.

Aproveitamos a ocasião para fomentar o diálogo sobre alguns temas importantes para a proteção de PI no setor, como o registro de ativos, o licenciamento e as práticas de combate ao mercado ilegal.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has established April 26 as World IP Day. This year’s chosen theme is “IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate!”. In a year of major global competitions, the proposal is to analyze the sports industry through the lens of protecting and promoting brands, inventions, and intellectual assets.

The sports sector involves various assets, ranging from the technical development of performance products to the visual identity of clubs and federations. Given the competitiveness of this market, IP management has become an important resource for business structuring and investment protection.

We take this opportunity to encourage dialogue on key topics for IP protection in the sector, such as asset registration, licensing, and practices to combat the illicit market.

Garé IP acompanhou a Operação ‘Replicário’, fruto de mais uma parceria bem-sucedida entre detentores de marcas e a Polícia Civil do Estado de Minas Gerais, através do Departamento Estadual de Combate a Fraudes e a Corrupção (3ºDEIF/DECCOF).

A ação é o resultado de ostensiva investigação policial, que teve início em notícias crime apresentadas pelas marcas lesadas, culminou na apreensão de mais de 15 mil pares de tênis contrafeitos, além da determinação de bloqueio judicial de até R$ 10.000.000,00 em ativos financeiros vinculados aos investigados.

As buscas ocorreram simultaneamente em residências, galpões logísticos e estabelecimentos comerciais localizados nas cidades de Ouro Branco, Itaverava, Nova Serrana, Perdigão e Pitangui, todas no estado de Minas Gerais.

Garé IP accompanied Operation ‘Replicário’, the result of yet another successful partnership between trademark owners and the Civil Police of the State of Minas Gerais, through the State Department for Combating Fraud and Corruption (3rd DEIF/DECCOF).

The operation is the result of an extensive police investigation, which began with criminal complaints filed by the affected brands and culminated in the seizure of more than 15,000 pairs of counterfeit sneakers, in addition to the court-ordered freezing of up to R$ 10,000,000.00 in financial assets linked to those under investigation.

The seizures took place simultaneously at residences, logistics warehouses, and commercial establishments located in the cities of Ouro Branco, Itaverava, Nova Serrana, Perdigão, and Pitangui, all in the state of Minas Gerais.

We congratulate all the agents involved in this important operation.
