Tradition brings us together. Joy makes the memories last.

Last Friday, we held our traditional magellan IP August Festival, a special occasion to celebrate together one of Brazil’s much-loved traditions.

There was dancing, traditional food and plenty of good cheer but, above all, there was the simple pleasure of being together as a team.

More than a celebration, occasions like this strengthen the bonds that make magellan IP an organisation built around, and above all, by its people.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone in the Team for joining in and making the occasion such a memorable one.

The ABPI Congress comes to Rio de Janeiro from 16 to 18 August, reimagined and renamed the Global Meeting on Innovation and Intellectual Property, ABPI 2026, at the Sheraton Grand Rio in Leblon.

magellan IP will be out in force. Leonor Magalhães Galvão (who was part of the organising committee behind this year’s new format), Caio Rodrigues da Silva, Alex Gonçalves de Almeida, Saulo Calazans and Luciana Noronha will be attending all three days.

Three days, one hotel, much of Brazil’s IP community under the same roof, and plenty of opportunities for meaningful exchanges on strategic IP protection in Brazil.

Argentina's patent office issued Resolution 197/2026 on June 18, published in the Boletín Oficial the following day, repealing Resolution 283/2015. For over a decade the repealed rule anchored restrictive examination criteria for biotechnology inventions and natural substances, including claim-format requirements that pushed protection toward isolated-state formulations of limited practical value.

The repeal completes a sequence. In March, Argentina had already revoked the 2012 joint resolution restricting pharmaceutical patent examination. The new framework reaches pending biotech applications, keeps plants, animals, and essentially biological processes excluded under Law 24,481, and preserves good-faith commercialization that began before any newly granted patent.

For companies building life sciences or agtech portfolios across Latin America, the filing math changed. Cases narrowed or abandoned for Argentina under the old criteria may deserve a second look, and new families can now plan Brazil and Argentina in parallel with fewer asymmetries between the two offices.

Regional portfolio strategy spent years treating Argentina as the jurisdiction of exceptions. Examination practice will need time to settle, but the direction is now written into the office's own guidelines.

[PT] O escritório de patentes da Argentina editou a Resolução 197/2026 em 18 de junho, publicada no Boletín Oficial no dia seguinte, revogando a Resolução 283/2015. Por mais de uma década, a norma revogada sustentou critérios restritivos de exame para invenções biotecnológicas e substâncias naturais, incluindo exigências de formato de reivindicação que empurravam a proteção para formulações em estado isolado, de valor prático limitado.

A revogação completa uma sequência. Em março, a Argentina já havia revogado a resolução conjunta de 2012 que restringia o exame de patentes farmacêuticas. O novo quadro alcança pedidos biotecnológicos pendentes, mantém plantas, animais e processos essencialmente biológicos excluídos pela Lei 24.481 e preserva a comercialização de boa-fé iniciada antes de eventual patente concedida sob as novas regras.

Para quem constrói portfólios de ciências da vida ou agtech na América Latina, a matemática de depósito mudou. Casos reduzidos ou abandonados para a Argentina sob os critérios antigos merecem uma segunda leitura, e novas famílias podem planejar Brasil e Argentina em paralelo com menos assimetrias entre os dois escritórios.

A estratégia regional de portfólio passou anos tratando a Argentina como a jurisdição das exceções. A prática de exame vai levar tempo para assentar, mas a direção agora está escrita nas próprias diretrizes do órgão.

An event gathering 2,000 startups in one venue is a reminder of scale. Every one of those companies is accumulating intangible assets right now: brands tested in public, software demonstrated on stage, technical solutions pitched to investors.

The gap we see in practice is timing. Protection decisions made at the seed stage cost little. The same decisions made after a competitor files first, or after a marketplace demands proof of registration, arrive with a price attached.
