Happy Independence Day, Bulgaria! πŸ‡§πŸ‡¬

Today we honor 118 years since Bulgaria declared its independence.

It is a day to celebrate this beautiful country and its people, as well as the right to sovereignty and the freedom to determine our own future.

Today, Bulgaria is also becoming a place where more and more people from around the world choose to build their own future.

Location-independent professionals, entrepreneurs, nomads and families are choosing Bulgaria as a place to live, work, build businesses and create a home base in Europe.

A different kind of independence, but the same idea at its core: the freedom to choose your own path.

Bulgaria ranked #12 out of 192 countries for international relocation.

The 2026 Rumavi Global Relocation Index compares countries across 24 factors, including taxes and affordability, quality of life, healthcare, safety, stability and how easy it is to actually settle and build a life there.

Bulgaria ranks just behind Malta ( #10) and Cyprus ( #11), and ahead of some of the most popular relocation destinations for international entrepreneurs like the UAE ( #13), Georgia ( #14) and Switzerland ( #24).

The ranking aside, Bulgaria offers a combination that's difficult to find in one place:

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί EU membership, Schengen & Eurozone
πŸ’° 10% personal income and corporate profit tax, 5% on dividends
πŸ’Έ capped social security contributions at 700 EUR
πŸ”οΈ Mountains, skiing and a Black Sea coast
🚍 Easy access to the rest of Europe incl. non-EU neighbours
πŸ’» A growing international and remote-work community

Malta and Cyprus remain attractive options, but island life does come with limitations like climate, geographical exposure and lack of good winter activities. UAE introduced a 9% corporate tax, offers a completely different lifestyle at higher living cost, and recently tensions shaping the world economy. Georgia remains a popular plan B option though, but Bulgaria gives you something neither can: the cheapest base inside the EU.

There is no single "best" country to relocate to. The right choice depends on your income, business, family and lifestyle.

If you are still paying more than 10% tax, you have not yet relocated to Bulgaria.

Your health coverage might work perfectly in Bulgaria. But what happens when you don’t stay in the country all the time?

For many expats living primarily in Bulgaria, local health coverage may be enough. But if you’re regularly moving between countries, spending longer periods abroad or travelling outside the EU, it’s worth checking what your coverage actually includes. 🌎

That’s why we partner with NOMADS.insure - helping our internationally mobile clients find health insurance that works across borders.

At NomadTax Bulgaria, we help you get the Bulgarian side of your setup right and connect you with trusted partners for the parts that go beyond it.

If you are still paying more than 10% tax, you have not yet relocated to Bulgaria. πŸ‡§πŸ‡¬ Book a free 15-minutes call and let us figure out the best solution for you.

The part nobody really talks about?

Where are you actually tax resident?
Where should you register your business?
What happens with social security?
Who does your accounting when your life spans more than one country?

Turns out, freedom comes with paperwork. πŸ˜…

But you don't have to spend your time figuring all of it out yourself.

At NomadTax Bulgaria, we help digital nomads, freelancers and remote entrepreneurs handle the less exciting side of location-independent life - from tax residency and company setup to accounting and administration.

πŸ‡§πŸ‡¬ Bulgaria had a bigger 2026 than most people realize.

New EURO currency. Full Schengen access on top of full EU membership. Its own Digital Nomad Visa for remote workers outside the EU.

Some of the best countries for nomads have not caught up yet.

This is not a country building a nomad scene from scratch. Bansko alone draws more than 700-800 people every year for its Nomad Fest, with more coworking density than almost anywhere else in Europe.

A one-bedroom apartment in Sofia runs less than half what you would pay in Lisbon.

If you are weighing where to base yourself in 2026, Bulgaria is deffinitely worth looking into.

One of the most common questions we get from international founders and digital nomads considering Bulgaria: should I register as a freelancer or open a company? πŸ‡§πŸ‡¬

The answer depends on more than just your income level.

Freelancer registration means a 7.5% effective tax on revenue. It is simpler to run, fewer administrative obligations, and best suited to solo professionals with straightforward income. There is no separation between personal and business finances and no personal liability protection. πŸ‘€

Company formation means 10% corporate tax and 5% on dividends. You get full separation of personal and business finances, the ability to deduct business expenses, and a structure that can scale β€” adding shareholders, managing multiple clients or expanding later. Minimum share capital is 1 EUR. 🏒

In practice: freelancer registration works well for solo consultants or service providers with lower or variable income. Company formation makes more sense once income grows, clients require invoicing from a legal entity, or there are longer-term plans to scale.

Both structures can be set up remotely. Both include full accounting and compliance support. βœ…

We led a panel at Bansko Nomad Fest called "Bulgaria: Europe's Hidden Gem for Digital Nomads and Expats." πŸ‡§πŸ‡¬

Joined by Holger Mette, Director of BNF, and Xenia Schneider from Staatenlos. The room was full and the questions were exactly the kind we like β€” specific, skeptical and practical. 🎀

Someone in the room pushed back. Said we were too critical of other countries.

Our co-founder Christoph Looser's response: Pompeii in Italy was wonderful until the day Vesuvius erupted. We need to face the risks.

That is the point. Choosing a base is not a lifestyle decision. It is a personal, business and legal decision that touches residency, banking, compliance, political stability, tax and many more factors β€” all at once. Getting it right matters more than picking somewhere that sounds good as tourist destination.

Bulgaria is not perfect. But it is stable, EU-compliant, fiscally independent and genuinely one of the most practical bases available for internationally mobile founders right now.

10% corporate and personal tax. 5% on dividends. Social security capped at €691 per month. No wealth tax. No capital gains tax on European stocks. No minimum stay requirement for tax residency. Company and freelance registration handled remotely. 1 EUR share capital. EU member state with full Schengen access. βœ…

That is why we are here.
