A US federal judge has struck down a Trump administration policy that suspended the issuance of immigrant visas to applicants from Bangladesh and 74 other countries.
The suspension took effect in January. Now, US District Judge Jeannette Vargas in Manhattan has ruled that the policy exceeded the authority of Secretary of State Marco Rubio and described it as “patently unlawful” and contrary to federal immigration law.
📌 What happened?
🇧🇩 Bangladesh was among the 75 countries affected.
⚖️ The judge ruled against the policy on 22 August 2026.
The policy had suspended immigrant visa issuance based on the applicant's nationality.
The State Department had argued that applicants from the designated countries were at high risk of becoming a public charge.
