Last month, Morrisons partner, Matt Ward, spoke with ABC Illawarra Radio about the changes in NSW law regarding the use of character references in sentencing proceedings.

These changes are the first of their kind in Australia, restricting the use of ‘good character’ references as a factor to reduce sentencing for an offender with sexual related charges. Have a listen of Matt’s thoughts on these changes as a criminal defence lawyer.

From 5 June to 8 June, double demerits are in full effect across NSW.

Double demerit points will apply to any traffic infringement in NSW, including:

- Speeding
- Illegal use of mobile phone
- Not wearing a seatbelt or incorrectly wearing a seatbelt (including your passengers)
- Riding a motorcycle without a helmet

If you exceed your demerit points, your licence can be suspended for a minimum of 3 months.
