I have some news to share with friends and clients of Peace Talks. As from next week, the family law side of Peace Talks will be going into "hibernation". I am excited to announce that I have accepted a new role as a Sessional Judicial Registrar for the newly created Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia and as such, I am unable to offer any services which may intersect with the Court. I will continue to offer limited private mediation services. Thank you for your support for my business over the past two-and-a-half years.

Peace Talks Family Law & Mediation now offers an innovative service for clients who want to resolve parenting and/or property matters with their former partner quickly and amicably. The Easy Separation process is a collaborative joint venture with another local law firm, Briese Lawyers. Follow the link to the website for details.

Easy Separations co-founders, Kym Briese of Briese Lawyers and Sharyn Wagner of Peace Talks are both experienced family lawyers who have seen the damage which the traditional adversarial approach to family law can inflict on separating couples who started out just wanting a fair outcome.

#2 Divorce does not alter property interests. It does however start the clock ticking for a property settlement. If either party intends to make an application to a Court for property settlement, they have up until one year after the date of divorce. To avoid the possibility of Court, the best option is to negotiate a property settlement soon after separation.

Fast Family Law Fact #1 The divorce rate in Australia has actually fallen in the 21st century. 2016 was the lowest divorce rate since 1976. In 1976 it was 4.6 per 1000 Australian residents, compared with 1.9 per 1000 in 2016. This could have something to do with the marriage rate falling from 9.3 per 1000 residents in 1970 and 4.9 in 2016. The highest divorce rate is in the 25-29 year age group, with the second highest being the 45-49 year age group.
