Happy New Year! We wish all our clients, colleagues and friends all the very best for 2024, and we look forward to another year of helping people with their Australian and New Zealand immigration needs.

The government released the long awaited Migration Strategy today. As Minister O'Neil said, the "once in a generation reform" proposes to overhaul Australia’s migration system through eight key actions, including a new approach to migration planning, new visas including the new Skills in Demand visa and a suite of legislative reforms to prevent worker exploitation.

NSW has released an update today on the state nomination program. To better address the evolving skills shortages across the state, NSW is shifting from publishing a list of eligible ANZSCO unit groups to a new sector-focused approach.

This means that state nomination will no longer be based on an occupation, and effective immediately, will be focussed on 'priority sectors that need skilled talent'. The priority sectors are

👩‍⚕️ Health
👩‍🏫 Education
💻 Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
🛣 Infrastructure
👩‍🌾 Agriculture

Despite this, high-ranking EOIs submitted in non-priority sectors may also be considered; however, the prospect of being invited in a non-priority sector is slim.

Invitation rounds for the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) will recommence next week.

The subclass 408 'Covid visa' will officially end in February 2024.

From September 2, 2023, only current holders of a subclass 408 (Pandemic stream) visa will be able to apply for a Pandemic Event visa. New applications for the Pandemic Event visa from September 2, 2023 until its closure in February 2024, will be granted a visa valid for six months only and will need to pay a Visa Application Charge of $405.
