What’s one of the biggest red flags in a business sale?
When the owners aren’t aligned.

In this upcoming episode of The deal room podcast, , Joanna teams up with business brokers Hugo Martin and Travis Latter for part 2 of our insights from the recent AIBB Best Practice Forum (Due Diligence). This time, they talk through why misalignment between founders can derail a deal, sometimes right at the finish line. They also dig into why understanding the "why" behind a business owner's drive to sell can reveal whether they are truly ready for a transaction — or whether there may be hidden risks ahead.

Our next exclusive referrer AI workshop is on Thursday 19 March, and this one is 100% for advisers navigating their way through AI.

In this session we’ll break down AI agents what they are, how they differ from tools like ChatGPT, and how to actually get AI doing useful work in your day-to-day business.
No theory. No tech demos. Just practical examples.

We’ll cover:
• What AI agents actually are (in plain English)
• The types of tasks AI is good at handling
• How advisers can use AI to reduce admin and repetition
• Real examples of how AI agents are being used right now
• How to set things up so AI works with you (not creating more work)

If you’ve heard people talking about “agents” but aren’t quite sure where they fit yet, this session is designed to close that gap.

Selling a business isn’t just about agreeing on the price.

Before a sale contract can be drafted, there’s a long list of details that need to be confirmed from employees and assets to leases, licences and key contracts.

When this information isn’t gathered upfront, transactions often slow down while everyone tries to fill the gaps.

To make this easier, we’ve created a simple checklist covering the critical information needed to prepare a business sale contract.

It’s designed for both business owners and brokers.

Once the commercial terms are agreed and this information is ready, contracts can often be drafted within 48 hours (assuming you have the right legal team on your side - psst.. That’s us).

On International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating at Aspect Legal, and reflecting on something simple: As women in business, we are driving the change by being the change.

Equality shouldn’t be an initiative. It should be a standard.

At Aspect Legal, we’re proud to have built a culture where trust, performance and professionalism define opportunity, not gender.

Many of the women in our team are also primary caregivers. We believe flexibility and professional growth can and should coexist. In our world, excellence does not require compromising family or personal responsibility.

We also support programs that empower women beyond our borders, combining our love of business with opportunities for women to create income for their families, forge their own paths and build businesses of their own. Because progress is not only about equality within workplaces, it is also about ensuring women have the opportunity to lead, innovate and create new enterprises, not just succeed within existing corporate structures.

International Women’s Day is a moment to acknowledge what shouldn’t be taken for granted. Equality isn’t universal. Opportunity isn’t evenly distributed.

While equality feels embedded in our workplace, we know it isn’t yet the reality everywhere.

We recognise that professional ambition often sits alongside caregiving, community roles and responsibilities that aren’t always visible. Enabling those to coexist isn’t a concession or an ‘initiative’, it’s a strength.

We see it.
And we value it.

Selling a business isn’t just about finding the right buyer it also involves a number of important legal documents that shape the transaction.

These can include confidentiality agreements (NDAs), term sheets or letters of intent that outline the key commercial terms, the main sale agreement (business or share sale), and in some cases employment agreements, lease arrangements, shareholders’ agreements, or security documents where payments are deferred.

Understanding these documents early can help avoid confusion and delays during the sale process.

Selling a business is rarely just a financial transaction.
For many owners, it’s deeply personal.

In this upcoming episode of The Deal Room Podcast, Travis Latter and Hugo Martin share why guiding a seller through the emotional side of a transaction is just as important as managing the technical process.

When sellers trust the team guiding them, they’re far better equipped to step back from the emotion and keep the sale moving toward completion.

This conversation was recorded as part of an AIBB event, where Joanna Oakey was invited to speak. Australian Institute of Business Brokers regularly delivers high-quality training and professional development for business brokers across Australia, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to share these insights with their community.

[New Episode] Not all corporate buyers are the same and choosing the wrong one can cost more than just price.

In Part 2 of this conversation, Joanna Oakey speaks with Kristin Carney from Piper Health about what corporate buyers really look for when acquiring medical practices, and how doctors can assess buyer fit beyond the headline number.

If you’re a medical practice owner (or advising them), this is essential listening.

• What post-sale risk actually looks like and how to avoid it
