This photo was taken in 2018 when I was awarded Agent of the Year for my area through RateMyAgent.
Five years earlier I had set myself a very clear goal — to become the number one selling agent in my area.
For years I worked towards that.
My daily routine looked something like this:
Early mornings letterbox dropping.
Afternoons door knocking followed by cold calling.
Late nights doing appraisals.
Weekends filled with open homes and community events.
I lived and breathed my area.
Eventually I achieved the goal.
But something interesting happened after that.
Instead of feeling excited to keep building on it, I realised the role itself wasn’t what was driving me anymore.
I still loved property.
What interested me far more was the other side of the transaction — helping people decide which property to buy and why.
Looking back, I realised I had been chasing the goal of becoming the top selling agent, rather than asking whether the role itself was what truly fulfilled me.
That realisation became the turning point in my career.
It led me to start again and move into the buyer’s agent side of the industry.
The years spent as a selling agent were incredibly valuable though. They gave me a deep understanding of how property deals really work — from pricing to negotiation and everything in between.
Sometimes career progression isn’t about climbing higher.
Sometimes it’s about finding the part of the industry that genuinely suits you.
