With cancer affecting so many individuals and families across the country, we are grateful to contribute towards the vital work being done by the Cancer Council.

We’re proud to see Employment, Workplace Relations & Safety Principal Melini Pillay featured in Financial Review discussing the growing issue of upward bullying in the workplace.

Melini shares insights on the increasing prevalence of bullying directed at managers and senior leaders, the challenges surrounding reporting, and the broader impact on workplace culture, leadership confidence and staff turnover.

“There’s a stigma for a manager. That deters them from complaining because they need to appear competent. If they’re complaining about their subordinates bullying them, they worry it shows weakness or incompetence".

A valuable contribution to an important conversation.

Think the “toxic boss” is the only villain? New data reveals a surge in upward bullying – and it’s making managers quit.

The New South Wales Court of Appeal has recently considered the practical application of obvious risk and contributory negligence under the Civil Liability Act 2002 (NSW) in two contrasting public liability decisions.

In The Owners – Strata Plan No 31337 v Balacco and MacLean v Richmond Valley Council, the Court examined how context, environmental cues and personal responsibility shape liability outcomes in managed and public spaces.

Senior Associate Ren Li and Law Graduate Aimee Topfer explore the key findings from each case and the lessons they offer for owners, occupiers, councils and insurers when assessing risk, hazard identification and the limits of liability for everyday surface irregularities.
