Celebrating Indigenous women this International Women’s Day. ✨

Last week our team joined the Gadigal Centre at the University of Sydney for their Ngamuru Luncheon Panel, bringing together students, staff and community to reflect on this year’s IWD theme, “Give to Gain.”

Dr Terri Janke was joined on the panel by Terri Janke and Company team members Charlie Jackson and Matilda Langford, sharing insights on leadership, advocacy and the protection of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP).

It was a powerful conversation about what we give through our work in supporting culture, community and the next generation, and what we gain in return.

A big thank you to the Gadigal Centre and Cianna Walker for hosting such a thoughtful and welcoming event, and for the beautiful bouquets 💐

New Law Way® Session just launched!

Handling access requests for Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) can raise complex questions about accessibility, regulation, and cultural integrity.

This one-hour session is designed for librarians, archivists, curators, and organisations working with ICIP materials.

"Libraries and Indigenous Cultural Protocols: Insights from the UQ Library ICIP Framework Project"

TJC recently worked with UQ Library to develop an ICIP Framework to support the cultural integrity of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property held in their collections.

Libraries and archives sit at a complex intersection of cultural authority, community rights, intellectual property law, and public access mandates. Developing clear ICIP protocols is an important step toward managing this responsibility in a culturally respectful and legally informed way.

If this work interests you, we’re also exploring these issues further in our upcoming Law Way® session on Handling Access Requests.

New Intern Spotlight!

We recently had the honour of hosting Ava Abela, a proud Biripai woman and UNSW Law and Criminology student, as an intern at Terri Janke and Company.

During her time with us, Ava contributed to research on emerging issues including AI deep-fakes and ICIP, while gaining insight into the day-to-day practice of an Indigenous-led law firm.

Ava brought both passion and thoughtful calm to her work at TJC. We look forward to seeing how this continues to shape her path in the legal profession.

Thank you, Ava, we learnt from you just as you learnt from us. 💜

Read blog post about her time here:

Zeyawgub is now officially trademarked 🎉🎉🎉.
I decided to go through Indigenous Law Firm, and ICIP specialists, Terri Janke and Company Pty Ltd, for this important process. They gave me peace of mind that my cultural concerns and responsibilities were met. This included getting formal approval from my Clan Elder, Ama Mary Betty Harris (through the assistance of koey Sissi, Elizabeth Fa'aoso), to use my business name of Zeyawgub.
All content is now heavily protected under this trademark, including my key work across Zeyawgub's Interconnectedness Framework TM.
Big eso to family and Terri Janke Lawyers for their assistance.

New article from NITV featuring Dr Terri Janke examining the rise of “Jarren”, an AI-generated Indigenous avatar.

The piece explores how AI-simulated Aboriginal identity represents a dangerous repackaging of Indigenous Knowledge, crossing boundaries of misuse, misinterpretation and misappropriation.

An important and timely conversation about technology, culture and responsibility.

In what some say is already become a disturbing trend, AI Indigenous avatars - digitally created by non-Indigenous people - are claiming to speak with cultural authority.
