ABOUT US

Kingsford Legal Centre is part of the University of New South Wales as well as being a community legal centre. The Centre is a community legal centre which provides free advice and referral and ongoing assistance to the residents of the local area. The Centre takes on cases where there is no other source of assistance or where acting for the client will benefit the community by achieving change in the law or government policy. Kingsford Legal Centre runs a clinical legal education program whereby students from the Law Faculty study the operation of the legal system by working for clients of the legal centre. The Centre provides services on a state-wide and local basis and undertakes education, policy and campaign work to promote equality of access to the legal system in Australia. Ria*, a proud African woman, organised a party at a function centre and paid for the venue. The day before the party the manager cancelled the event saying that people from Ria's country "always cause trouble." KLC's free statewide discrimination legal service represented Ria in a racial discrimination complaint against the venue, and negotiated an outcome consisting of compensation and an apology. KLC has specialised in discrimination law for over 40 years. Community Legal Centres NSW

Today, on National Sorry Day, we acknowledge and reflect on the persisting harm caused by the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and cultures. We honour the strength, resilience and courage of Stolen Generations survivors and their communities, and recognise the importance of truth-telling, healing and reconciliation. KLC stands with our local Aboriginal community and with all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in addressing these injustices, starting with implementing the recommendations in the Bringing Them Home report. @unsw_law UNSW Law & Justice

Brianne*, an Aboriginal woman from a regional area, noticed she was being followed around the supermarket. The manager accused her of stealing groceries, even though the cashier confirmed her purchases. She had enough of being treated this way and came to KLC- we helped her lodge a formal discrimination complaint and settle her matter. We are proud we were able to stand with her through this process. For over 40 years KLC has run a specialist NSW-wide clinic providing free legal assistance in all discrimination law matters, including racial discrimination- contact us on 9385 9566 or [email protected]
