So inspirational! Get it ❤️
This is Tama, our JR youth officer in Mt Druitt, Sydney, who works with Aboriginal boys and young men in the area to build support networks and programs that help them through the criminal justice system. Today Tama is speaking at a meeting between senior Federal, NSW government bureaucrats and members of the Aboriginal communities in Bourke, Moree and Mt Druitt - at this 'Reinvestment Forum' we are talking about potential reforms to the systems that harm Aboriginal communities and the locally-led solutions that can ultimately reduce interactions with the criminal justice system. This is a unique opportunity for Aboriginal communities and government to co-design 'justice reinvestment' in NSW. We released a Report on Monday that shares the Aboriginal community's experience of the criminal justice system and their thoughts on what 'reinvestment' means. The Report reveals how the criminal justice system continues to fail Aboriginal communities, with the average daily number of Aboriginal adult prisoners in NSW increasing by 36.4% over the last decade. At the same time, NSW prison expenditure increased by 31.9%. The Report also reveals that communities have the answers. Aboriginal communities are strong and resilient. Effective solutions to Aboriginal over-representation within the criminal justice system are to be found within Aboriginal communities. Aboriginal people have a good understanding of what will work to address offending, including at an individual community level. This understanding comes from their lived experience of both Aboriginal community life and of the justice system. Currently, government has control over resources and decision-making in relation to reducing offending but has less understanding of what needs to be done to achieve this outcome.
It should be beyond dispute that strengthening of self-determination is crucial to achieving better outcomes for Aboriginal people, including justice outcomes. Project activities included in the broad scope of work First Nations communities undertake to this end can for example include early childhood health and development; access to driver licenses to community mentoring and support of those at risk of su***de, exiting prison or appearing in court. We can do better together. www.justreinvest.org.au
