Harley began his career with Steindls as an undergraduate whilst completing his studies over 5 years ago.

Since then, Harley has become an integral part of our commercial law team, often assisting our clients with large and complex commercial transactions.

This morning the Federal Government unveiled their new ‘HomeBuilder’ stimulus package.
HomeBuilder provides eligible owner-occupiers (including first home buyers) with a grant of $25,000 to build a new home or substantially renovate an existing home. HomeBuilder will assist the residential construction market by encouraging the commencement of new home builds and renovations.

At a glance
To be eligible for HomeBuilder, you must meet the following criteria:
• You are a natural person (not a company or trust);
• You are aged 18 years or older;
• You are an Australian citizen;
• You meet one of the following two income caps:
- $125,000 per annum for an individual applicant based on your 2018-19 tax return or later; or
- $200,000 per annum for a couple based on both 2018-19 tax returns or later;
• You enter into a building contract between 4 June 2020 and 31 December 2020 to either:
- build a new home as a principal place of residence, where the property value does not exceed $750,000; or
- substantially renovate your existing home as a principal place of residence, where the renovation contract is between $150,000 and $750,000, and where the value of your existing property does not exceed $1.5 million;
• Construction must commence within three months of the contract date.

COVID-19 UPDATE

Our office is still open.

We can confirm that no one in our office has tested positive to COVID-19. The health and well-being of our staff, clients and community is our top priority at this time.

It is because of this, we kindly ask that if you are feeling unwell, or have been in contact with anyone who has tested positive for the virus not to enter our office.

If you do have an appointment and are feeling well, we hope you understand we will not be shaking hands and kindly ask you to use the hand sanitiser provided at the front desk.

We will continue to comply with the instructions and directions from the Department of Health and continue to monitor and manage COVID-19 in order to respond as necessary.

A big congratulations is in order for Gerry Epstein, Partner of our firm who today celebrates his 40th anniversary at Steindls Lawyers!! On this day, 40 years ago, Gerry started as an articled clerk. He has played a massive part in the growth and longevity of Steindls Lawyers. We are so proud of you Gez! :)

The Partners and Staff would like to congratulate Jane who is today celebrating her 25 year anniversary at Steindls Lawyers. During this time, Jane has had three beautiful children, commenced studying law, graduated from university and been admitted as a Solicitor. Jane is a valued and loyal member of our firm who practises predominately in Property Law and handles most of our developer clients on the Gold Coast, Ipswich and Brisbane. Pizza Hut drivers not paid enough dough!

The Fair Work Ombudsman has found a Gold Coast Pizza Hut franchisee liable for not paying an employee enough dough.

When calculating entitlements for employees or contractors, it is important that business owners gets proper legal advice about the differences between contractor and employee relationships.

THE former owner of a Pizza Hut store who used a sham contract to exploit a delivery driver has had his company put into liquidation, unable to pay a $216,000 fine.

The Queensland Government has made grants available for small businesses to access up to $5,000 to put towards the costs of obtaining professional advice and assistance with the early stages of starting a new business. Applications close 30 August 2019.

Too often we see disputes and problems arise when business owners do not get proper legal advice from the beginning about the correct set-up and structure of their business venture. This grant provides a great opportunity for new business owners to access funds to put towards their legal and other set up costs.

Matthew Jones has been promoted to Partner. Matthew commenced his career at Steindls in 2014 and has excelled in the firm's litigation department. Matthew practices primarily in property, body corporate, commercial and estate disputes.

Chloe Houghton has been promoted to Senior Associate. Chloe has extensive experience in all areas of property law, wills and estate planning and commercial transactions. Chloe is renowned for her people skills and the exceptional relationships she has developed with her clients and referrers.

Provided that an appropriate resolution has been passed, bodies corporate in Queensland can impose penalty interest amounts on lot owners of up to 30% per annum for overdue levies that remain unpaid.

Penalty interest amounts charged to a lot owner can be waived if a Committee is satisfied that special reasons exist for doing so.

The daughter of former Prime Minister Bob Hawke is reportedly planning on filing a Family Provision Application against the Estate on the basis she believes adequate provision has not been made for her in the Will.

It will be a matter for the Court to decide whether further provision be made to the daughter.
