🇦🇺 What is the Subclass 186 visa?
The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) Subclass 186 is an Australian permanent residence visa for skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian employer. Once granted, it allows the visa holder to live, work and study in Australia indefinitely, access Medicare, sponsor eligible relatives and potentially apply for Australian citizenship when eligible.
Two of the main pathways are:
🔹 Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) — commonly used by eligible 457/482/SID visa holders transitioning to permanent residence through their employer. Applicants usually need at least two years of eligible sponsored full-time employment.
🔹 Direct Entry (DE) — provides a direct permanent residence pathway for eligible skilled workers. Generally, applicants must be under 45 unless exempt, have an eligible occupation, at least three years of relevant work experience, a positive skills assessment unless exempt, and Competent English.
Importantly, a skills assessment is not required at time of application for the TRT stream, while Direct Entry applicants generally require one unless an exemption applies.
💡 Tips for a stronger Subclass 186 application
✅ Choose the correct stream — TRT and Direct Entry have different eligibility and evidentiary requirements.
✅ Check eligibility before lodging — occupation, age, English, employment history, skills assessment and any applicable exemptions need to be considered carefully.
✅ Get the nomination right — the employer's nomination is a critical component of the process. The Department must approve the employer nomination before the 186 visa can be granted. Immigration and citizenship Website
✅ Check salary requirements carefully — for relevant ENS nominations lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027, the Core Skills Income Threshold is $79,423, and Australian Market Salary Rate requirements also apply. Immigration and citizenship Website
✅ Lodge a decision-ready application — Home Affairs specifically notes that applications containing all necessary supporting documents can generally be processed more quickly.
