Think before you post- it could end up in court.

Going through a separation? Your social media activity may be more relevant to your family law matter than you think.

Screenshots, messages, photos, comments and posts can all potentially become relevant evidence in parenting and property proceedings.

Before you post about:
❌ Your ex-partner
❌ Your children or parenting arrangements
❌ Your relationship breakdown
❌ Your finances or lifestyle
❌ Your family law matter

…pause and think about how that post could look if it was later shown to a lawyer, mediator or Judge.

Our tip: If you’re involved in a family law dispute, assume that anything you put online could be seen by the other side.

When in doubt, don’t post it.

1,000 matters and counting! 🎉

Since being founded in 2020 by Principal Kris Medson, our firm has grown into a dedicated team of 8, and we’re incredibly proud to have now reached 1,000 matters.

Behind every matter is a person, a family and often a challenging chapter in someone’s life. We’re grateful to every client who has placed their trust in us to guide and support them through those moments.

This milestone is a reflection of the incredible growth of our firm, but most importantly, the hard work, care and commitment of our team.

We’re incredibly grateful to our clients, colleagues and community for their trust and support over the past six years. We look forward to continuing to provide thoughtful, practical and compassionate legal support to those who need it.

Thank you for being part of our journey.

Today some of our team attended the Holmes List Winter Family Law Conference.

It was a fantastic opportunity to stay up to date with developments and engage in some really valuable discussions across a range of family law topics, including:

🔹 Property, trusts and issues of control

🔹 Credibility and the assessment of evidence

🔹 The evolving role of AI in legal practice

🔹 The proof and evidentiary challenges surrounding coercive control

A great day of learning, discussion and professional development, and a valuable opportunity to bring fresh insights back to our practice and our clients.

Family violence isn’t just a legal issue – it’s a community issue.

This week, the Federal Government announced proposed national standards for men’s behaviour change programs, with the aim of improving the quality and consistency of support available across Australia. The hope is that stronger, evidence-based programs can help address the behaviours that lead to family violence and better protect women and children.

While legal protections remain vital, lasting change also comes from prevention, education and accountability.

If you or someone you know is navigating separation where family violence is a concern, it’s important to understand your legal options and the protections available. Our team is here to provide clear, compassionate advice when it’s needed most.

Preparing for your first family law appointment? 📋

Bringing a few key documents can help your lawyer understand your circumstances and provide more tailored advice.

Before your appointment, try to gather:

➡️ Financial documents (bank statements, payslips, loan details)

➡️ A list of your assets and liabilities

➡️ Information about your children and current parenting arrangements (if applicable)

➡️ Any existing legal documents or Court Orders

➡️ A timeline of important dates, such as your separation

Don’t worry if you don’t have everything, bring what you can, and we’ll guide you through the rest.

What does a Family Violence Intervention Order do?

A Family Violence Intervention Order is a court order designed to protect a person from family violence. It places legal conditions on another person (the respondent) to help ensure the safety of the protected persons.

The Order can prohibit the respondent from contacting or approaching the protected person, attending their home, workplace or other specified locations, and engaging in behaviour that is threatening, abusive, or coercive. In some cases, it can also exclude the respondent from a shared home.

These orders are not one-size-fits-all. The court can tailor the conditions depending on the circumstances and level of risk involved. The Order can also extend protection to children, new partners, or other family members if needed.

While having an Intervention Order made against someone is not a criminal offence, breaching the order is. This can result in serious legal consequences. Intervention Orders can also impact parenting arrangements, as the court will prioritise the safety of those involved, especially children.

If you or someone you know may need protection, seeking legal advice early can help you understand your options and the support available.

On the 27th of March, Medson Legal had the pleasure of attending the Svenson Barristers CPD Day held at the RACV Club in Melbourne. The event brought together leading practitioners for a day of insightful discussion, professional development, and collaboration within the legal community.

We are proud to share that our Principal, Kristine Medson, was invited to speak at the event. Kris delivered a thoughtful and engaging presentation, contributing her expertise and perspective to the program. Her participation reflects Medson Legal's ongoing commitment to staying at the forefront of legal practice and actively engaging in opportunities that support learning and excellence within the profession.

We thank Svenson Barristers for hosting such a well-organised and valuable event and look forward to continuing to engage with colleagues across the industry.

Meet Nadine

Admitted to practice in 2020, Nadine began her legal career as a Law Clerk in 2018, building strong foundations in a range of practice areas. She worked in busy Melbourne general practices before making the decision in early 2023 to focus exclusively on family law. Nadine joined Medson Legal in early 2024 and has since become a valued member of our growing team.

Nadine practises primarily in family law, assisting clients across a broad range of matters including parenting arrangements, property settlements and complex financial issues. She understands that parenting disputes can be particularly sensitive and emotionally challenging, and she approaches each matter with care, empathy and a genuine commitment to achieving outcomes that prioritise the best interests of children.

With extensive experience in commercial litigation and property law, Nadine brings a strategic and detail-focused approach to her work. Her broader legal background enhances her ability to provide clear, concise and accurate advice, particularly in matters involving complex asset structures or financial considerations.

In addition to family law, Nadine also assists clients in the areas of Wills, Estates and Estate Litigation, offering practical and considered guidance during what can often be difficult times.

Nadine is known for her empathetic understanding, professionalism and ability to support clients with both compassion and clarity. We are delighted to have her as part of the Medson Legal team.
