The 2026-27 Federal Budget contains some of the most significant proposed tax reforms in recent years, with Labor’s announced changes likely to affect Australian businesses, investors and families.

Proposed changes to capital gains tax concessions, negative gearing and discretionary trusts have created uncertainty for many clients about how they should structure investments, businesses and family wealth.

These reforms are complex and, for many clients, frustrating and difficult to navigate.

At Morgan + English, we are working through the Budget announcements and proposed commencement dates, including what the changes may mean for clients and how we can assist with reviewing existing structures, asset protection and succession planning arrangements.

The earlier advice is obtained, the more options may be available, particularly where restructuring or forward planning is required before the proposed reforms take effect.

A great afternoon at the HTBA Tax & Legal Updates on 8 May šŸŽ

We’re always proud to support the thoroughbred industry with clear, actionable advice — thanks to our Associate Lawyer, Laura, who presented.

Laura shared that it was a fantastic afternoon connecting with members of the thoroughbred industry and discussing practical insights and developments impacting the sector.

Thank you to the Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Assn for hosting and to everyone who joined us!

Such a great morning connecting at the Women in Ag Coffee & Connections event April 30!

It was fantastic to see so many people from across the industry come together, displaying a real reflection of the strength, energy and support within the Ag community.

We particularly loved hearing from an inspiring panel of founders who shared their experiences so openly, a valuable perspective on the realities behind building a business in ag — the decisions, risks and trade-offs that don’t always get talked about.

Thank you to Women in Ag and the Rabobank team for hosting such a thoughtful event, we’re looking forward to the next one ✨

New requirements are coming. From 1 July 2026, changes to anti-money laundering laws will introduce additional identity verification steps before certain services can be provided.

We’re sharing what this means now, so there are no surprises later.

Albert is our firm’s former racehorse, and his journey is a special one.

After retiring from racing, Albert spent time in rehabilitation under the care of a dedicated equine veterinarian, where his wellbeing was the clear priority. With the right support, patience and expertise, he has gone from recovery to truly thriving, stepping confidently into the next chapter of his life beyond the track.

Today, Albert has been successfully rehomed and is building a new career in show jumping, demonstrating the versatility of retired racehorses and the opportunities available beyond racing.

Stories like Albert’s are a reminder that equine welfare doesn’t stop when racing does. It’s a lifelong responsibility. One that the industry continues to take seriously through rehabilitation, re-homing and long term care.

Equine welfare is not only at the heart of the racing industry, but also at the heart of our Thoroughbred team here at M+E. If you’d like to learn more or speak with us about any equine related matters, we’d be pleased to connect!
