AMO is thankful that Albanese has used his leadership to retain a compassionate and just welcome for the most vulnerable.

According to ABC News, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has "guaranteed" the Refugee and Humanitarian Program will not be cut, despite reports earlier today that the program would be cut by 6,250 places.

While this is extremely welcome news, we should not and will not cease our advocacy for the protection of the humanitarian program. We will continue our calls for:
- the Refugee and Humanitarian Program to be maintained, strongly opposing any efforts to reduce it
- the expansion of protection pathways in addition to the 20,000 places currently offered by the program
- Australia to continue to play a constructive international role in refugee protection

We will also continue our work to fight for fairness in Australia’s migration and refugee protection system.

Together, we can push for a humanitarian program and protection system that upholds fairness and compassion.

Tampa was never only about a ship. It was the moment cruelty became an Australian political strategy.

Twenty-five years ago, the MV Tampa rescued 433 people, most of them Hazara people fleeing persecution in Afghanistan from a sinking boat.

What followed was not simply a “border dispute.” It was a political choice.

A rescue ship was treated as a threat. Frightened people seeking safety were turned into political weapons. Armed SAS troops were sent aboard, while the people Australia refused to see were reduced to words designed to frighten us: illegals, queue jumpers, boat people.

Tampa helped create a blueprint that still shapes Australia today: offshore detention, secrecy, indefinite limbo and the idea that deliberately making people suffer could be defended as “strong borders.”

The new documentary promises to show that the story was not “black and white.” History rarely is. But complexity must never become a solvent that dissolves responsibility.

We can understand political pressure, maritime law and competing accounts without pretending every decision was morally equal.

The facts at the centre remain painfully clear: human beings were in danger. They were rescued. They needed safety. Our government chose to turn their lives into an election strategy and Australia rewarded it.

Tampa did not begin Australia’s cruelty towards refugees, and it certainly did not end it. Its legacy lives in every person detained offshore, every family separated, every child harmed and every year of life stolen by uncertainty.

Twenty-five years later, the question is not only what happened aboard that ship.

The question is what Tampa taught us to tolerate.

Because borders are policies.

Cruelty is a choice.

And so is humanity.

FAREWELL Vicki Craig.
Current and former AMO staff gathered at Etlas Uyghur restaurant for a final goodbye for Vicki.
Vicki joined the AMO team 12 years ago. We needed a receptionist who understood our clientele and the demands of Immigration. Vicki had just returned to NSW after working on Christmas Island so we asked her if she couid fill in for 6 weeks.
She ended up buying a house in Adelaide snd staying for 11 years before returning to NSW and working remotely for a further 12 months.
Vicki has been an extremely loyal and hard worker and is renowned for being very thorough and picking up all the discrepancies and poor documents!
We invited her back to Adelaide for her last week with AMO to say a proper goodbye and thankyou.
We wish you all the very best Vicki in the next chapter of your life.
THANKYOU fir everything. We will miss you.

Australian Citizenship grants are coming fast lately. We have followed Sheikh Sulaiman's journey over many, many years and assisted him with numerous applications on the way - so it is a great joy to see him finally celebrate the conferral of Australian citizenship.
Congratulations Sheikh - we wish you all the very best in your future together here in Australia.

Another happy client finally reunited with family after 15 years separation.

"Thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart. You helped me begin my life again at a time when I had almost completely lost hope. I was extremely discouraged and felt as though everything in my life had come to an end.

Your kindness, support, and help gave me hope again. I thank God that you were there for me and that He placed you in my life as an angel of hope and support.

I honestly do not know how I can thank you enough for everything you have done for me. You helped me so much with my visa and also with the visas of my family. Your support has meant more to me than I can put into words.

"Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke delayed a key speech to the National Press Club last week regarding immigration. The reasons given include the lack of detail in how key immigration policies will impact people practically.
There are rumours that work rights and the right to appeal negative decisions for asylum seekers will be stripped away.....Having a strong and independent judiciary is essential to any functioning democracy. It is particularly important in Australia where we do not have a bill of rights.
A totalitarian bent
Countries with dominant executive branches are also known as authoritarian or totalitarian countries. The High Court has made it clear they will protect against such a development in Australia. We wait to see what the Home Affairs Minister, the Coalition and One Nation will announce next and whether it further encroaches on Australia’s separation of powers."

The Gageler High Court is pushing back to sure up the Constitutional limits of power of the judiciary, executive and legislature.

When you've had to leave everything behind and start again somewhere new, having a place to call home, and a place to belong, can never be taken for granted.
