Are You Legally Cleared as a Director? 🚨

Director Identification Numbers (DIN) are now a key part of Australia’s company compliance rules and the ATO is taking them seriously.

If you’re a company director, you’re required to apply for and hold a valid DIN. It’s designed to prevent false or fraudulent director identities and improve transparency across Australian businesses.

Failing to apply for a DIN on time, applying too late, or providing incorrect details can lead to serious consequences, including fines and potential penalties issued by the ATO and ASIC. In some cases, breaches can also impact your ability to be appointed as a director in the future.

With enforcement increasing, directors are being urged to ensure their details are up to date and compliant to avoid unnecessary penalties or complications.

If you’re unsure about your status, it’s worth checking now... not later. ⚠️

The Federal Budget has put discretionary trusts back in focus đź‘€

For many family businesses and investors, trusts have been used for tax planning, asset protection, and flexibility. Proposed changes could mean tighter rules and less flexibility than business owners are used to.

If your structure hasn’t been reviewed in a while, now’s the time to make sure it still fits how you operate today. Speak with your legal and accounting advisors before EOFY decisions are locked in.

Don't let a simple error become a costly problem!

Revenue NSW is continuing to strengthen its oversight of property transactions, with increased monitoring of stamp duty concessions, foreign purchaser surcharges, and land tax declarations. Buyers, investors, and property owners who incorrectly claim exemptions or fail to meet eligibility requirements — even unintentionally — may face significant consequences, including penalties, reassessments, and interest charges.

With property laws and taxation requirements becoming more complex, it’s important to ensure all documentation, declarations, and applications are accurate before contracts are signed or concessions are claimed.

Seeking legal advice early in the process can help identify potential issues, minimise risk, and ensure your property transaction proceeds smoothly and compliantly.

Big Changes for NSW Motorcycle Riders From July 1 🚨

NSW is introducing major new motorcycle safety laws from July 1, with learner riders required to wear approved hi-vis vests or jackets, and all learner and provisional riders needing certified protective gloves.
The changes are part of the biggest motorcycle safety overhaul in almost 20 years, aimed at reducing serious crashes and fatalities among new riders.

Despite motorcycles accounting for just 3.8 per cent of registered vehicles in NSW, they represent almost one in five road deaths.

Riders caught not complying could face fines of around $330 and 2 demerit points. For L and P1 riders, that’s a big deal considering they only have a 4-point limit before risking suspension.

EOFY 2026: The crackdown has started!

The ATO is increasing compliance checks ahead of EOFY 2026, with a stronger focus on work-related deductions, investment claims, rental property expenses, and undeclared side income.

Taxpayers are being urged to take extra care when preparing their returns, as incorrect or unsubstantiated claims can trigger delays, audits, or penalties. The ATO uses data-matching systems with employers, banks, and third-party platforms to identify inconsistencies, meaning claims that don’t align with records are more likely to be reviewed.

Before lodging, ensure all deductions are supported with proper receipts, logbooks, or documentation, and that any side hustle or additional income is accurately declared.
