This is one of the most common misconceptions in family law.

Under Australian family law, property settlements are based on what is just and equitable, not an automatic 50/50 division.

When determining a property settlement, the Court may consider factors such as:
-Financial contributions made by each person
-Non-financial contributions (including caring for children and homemaking)
-Future needs and earning capacity
-The length of the relationship
-The care of children moving forward
-In some circumstances, the impact of domestic and family violence

Every relationship and family situation is different, which means every outcome can be different too.

On Monday, 27 July at 2:00pm AEST, a nationwide Emergency Alert test will be sent to all compatible mobile devices across Australia. This includes, iPads and smartwatches.

For most people, it's simply a routine test. However, if you or someone you know has a phone that needs to remain hidden for safety reasons, this alert may make a loud sound and display a message, even if the device is on silent or Do Not Disturb.
If you have access to a safe phone, or know someone who does, now is a good time to consider planning ahead:

🔔 Turn the device off or switch it to aeroplane mode before 2:00pm AEST.
🔔 Leave it off until at least one hour after the test has finished.
🔔 If possible, keep the device away from the home and out of earshot before turning it back on.

Please consider safely sharing this information with anyone who may need it. A simple reminder could help someone stay safe.
