Parenting Plans vs Consent Orders

When parents separate, having clear arrangements in place can help provide consistency and certainty for everyone; particularly the children.

While Parenting Plans and Consent Orders can cover many of the same things, including where children live, time with each parent, holidays, communication and important decisions, there is one key difference:
A Parenting Plan is a written agreement between parents, but it is not legally enforceable.
Consent Orders are approved by the Court and are legally binding.

Neither option is automatically “better”. The right approach will depend on your family, your circumstances and the level of flexibility or certainty you need.

Understanding your options can help you make informed decisions that work for your family now and into the future.
