R U OK? Day is a great reminder to check in on our friends and family who may be struggling.

Starting a conversation is a great way to show your friend or family member they are supported and provides a chance to help them find positive ways to manage during a difficult time.

Here are some simple steps on how to ask “R U OK?”:

1. Ask R U OK?: Be relaxed and ask how they are really doing. It can be helpful to mention specific things that have made you concerned. If they don’t want to open up, don’t pressure them to. Remind them that you’re there for them if they decide do want to talk, or encourage them to speak to someone else if they need to.
2. Listen with an open mind: As they open up, listen without interrupting or rushing them, and take what they seriously. Don’t judge their experiences but acknowledge their feelings and encourage them to explain how they feel.
3. Encourage action: Ask if there is any way you can support them, and encourage seeking professional help if it’s needed.
4. Check in: Stay in touch to check on how they’re going after your conversation. Reminding your friend or family member that they are supported and aren’t alone can make a real difference during hard times.
