National Reconciliation Week may be over, but the journey of reconciliation continues every day.

At Aboriginal Family Legal Services, our commitment to reconciliation extends beyond a single week of reflection. We remain dedicated to walking alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families, and communities, advocating for justice, supporting self-determination, and creating stronger futures grounded in culture, respect, and understanding.

Across the communities we serve and throughout this beautiful country we call home, we recognise that reconciliation is an ongoing journey, one that requires action, partnership, truth-telling, and a shared commitment to positive change.

Together, we continue moving forward with strength, respect, and hope for future generations.

Today we acknowledge and celebrate Mabo Day, a significant moment in Australia's history that recognises the strength, determination and legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo and the Meriam people.

Mabo Day commemorates the landmark 1992 High Court decision that overturned the legal fiction of terra nullius and recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have maintained a continuous connection to Country for thousands of generations.
This day is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of truth, justice, self-determination and the enduring rights of First Nations peoples to their lands, waters and cultures.

At Aboriginal Family Legal Services, we recognise the significance of this milestone and honour those who continue to advocate for the rights, voices and futures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across Western Australia.

Today, we remember the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo and all those who fought for recognition, justice and the protection of culture and Country.

Always was. Always will be. Aboriginal land.

What a Weekend! ✨

The AFLS Pinjarra team attended the 2026 Pinjarra Festival at Edenvale Heritage Precinct, connecting with community and sharing information about the services and supports available through our Pinjarra office.

Throughout the day, our team spoke with more than 50 community members about a range of legal and non-legal supports, including family and domestic violence, family law, child protection matters, advocacy and referral pathways. The festival provided a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of AFLS services and engage directly with local families in a community setting.

The day commenced with a Welcome to Country and cultural performance by Theo Kearing and his son, recognising the ongoing connection of the Bindjareb people to Country, culture and community.

With more than 15,000 people attending the festival, the event created an excellent opportunity for local services and organisations to connect with the wider community.

A big thank you to our Pinjarra team: Sam Salmon (Solicitor), Violet Nou (Family Advocate) and Carly Terry Administration Officer / Community Engagement Worker) for representing AFLS.

It has been a busy time in the Pilbara for the Aboriginal Family Legal Services Port Hedland team, connecting with community and supporting conversations across two key events.

On National Sorry Day, the team attended a community gathering hosted by Yorgum Healing Services at Lotteries House. The day was an opportunity to recognise and acknowledge the Stolen Generations, honouring those who were forcibly removed from their families under past government policies. AFLS supported the event by delivering the Healing Hands program and staff attended alongside stakeholders and community members.

The team also hosted a Law Week BBQ at the Port Hedland Courthouse, raising awareness about the legal system and access to justice. In collaboration with Legal Aid Western Australia, the event brought together community members and services for a yarn, information sharing, and a free sausage sizzle.

The Port Hedland team attended the Hedland National Reconciliation Week breakfast at Shay Gap Park, hosted by Julyardi Aboriginal Corporation.

Organisations from across Hedland gathered alongside respected Elders and emerging Elders to share stories, reflect, and yarn about what reconciliation means to each of us.

The morning created a space for connection, understanding, and strengthening relationships within our community.

National Reconciliation Week reminds us that reconciliation is built through listening, learning, respect, and walking together toward stronger futures for all.
