Received your Notice of Assessment, but not sure what it all means?

Once the ATO processes your Tax Return, it sends you a Notice of Assessment, also known as an NOA.

Your NOA explains how the ATO calculated your final tax result. It includes important figures such as:
• Your taxable income
• The tax calculated on your income
• Tax offsets and credits
• The Medicare levy or Medicare levy surcharge, if applicable
• Tax you’ve already paid
• Your final refund or amount owing

The most important part is the outcome:

CR means you have a credit. This will usually be refunded, although some or all of it may be used to pay other government debts.

DR means you have an amount to pay.

Swipe through as we explain each section in plain English and show you where your final result came from.

Save this post for later or share it with someone who may find it helpful.

Driving 20 kilometres to work and 20 kilometres home could add up to more than 8,000 kilometres a year—but can you claim it?

Your regular trip between home and your usual workplace is generally considered private travel, even if you drive a long distance, work outside normal hours or there’s no public transport available.

Work-related travel may include driving:
[✅]  Between separate jobs or workplaces
[✅]  From your usual workplace to another work location
[✅]  To visit clients, customers or suppliers
[✅]  With essential bulky tools or equipment, when the ATO’s conditions are met

Remember, choosing the cents-per-kilometre or logbook method doesn’t automatically make a trip tax deductible. The travel must be genuinely work-related.

If you’re eligible to claim car expenses, use the correct method and keep records to support your claim.

Our FREE vehicle logbook can help you keep track of your work-related travel, link in the comments.

Can you automatically claim 5,000 kilometres at tax time?

The short answer is no.

The 5,000-kilometre limit is the maximum you can claim per car using the cents-per-kilometre method. You can only claim the work-related kilometres you actually travelled and can support with records.

Driving between home and your usual workplace is generally considered private travel and can’t be claimed.

Depending on your circumstances, eligible travel may include driving:
• Between separate jobs or workplaces
• From one work site to another
• To visit clients, customers or suppliers
• With essential bulky tools or equipment, when the ATO’s conditions are met

You don’t need a formal logbook for the cents-per-kilometre method, but you still need records showing how you calculated your claim.

Remember: 5,000 kilometres is the limit, not an automatic deduction.

Could you be paying the Medicare levy when you don’t need to?

If you weren’t entitled to Medicare for all or part of the financial year, you may be able to claim a Medicare levy exemption in your Tax Return.

This may apply to some temporary visa holders and others who weren’t entitled to Medicare during that period.

You may need a Medicare Entitlement Statement (MES) from Services Australia before lodging. This confirms the dates you weren’t eligible for Medicare.

The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income, so claiming the correct exemption period could make a difference to your final tax result.

Before you lodge:
✔ Check whether you were eligible for Medicare during the year
✔ Apply for an MES if required
✔ Claim the correct exemption period in your Tax Return

Not everyone qualifies, so always check your individual circumstances.

Waiting for your tax refund? It may take a little longer than you might expect.

Most online Tax Returns take around 2–4 weeks for the ATO to process. Some may take longer if additional checks or manual processing are required.

Once your Tax Return is with the ATO, the processing time is outside the control of your tax agent or Tax Return provider.

That’s why One Click Life offers optional Next Day Refund for eligible customers who want to access part of their estimated refund sooner.

If approved, you can access up to 50% of your estimated refund, capped at $1,000, the next business day while the ATO continues processing your return.

Next Day Refund is available at checkout for eligible current-year Tax Returns only. Prior-year returns are not eligible.

(Eligibility requirements and T&Cs apply.)

Made a mistake on your Tax Return? Here’s what to do next.

Whether you forgot to include income, entered the wrong amount or claimed a deduction incorrectly, you can generally fix the mistake by lodging an amendment.

First, wait until the ATO has processed your original Tax Return and issued your Notice of Assessment.

For most individuals, you have two years to lodge an amendment. This period starts the day after your Notice of Assessment is issued—not the day you lodged your return.

After your return is amended:
- You may receive an additional refund if you paid too much tax
- You may need to pay the difference if you didn’t pay enough tax

If you spot a mistake, gather your supporting records and correct it as soon as possible.

*Different amendment time limits may apply depending on your circumstances.

Could private hospital cover cost less than paying extra tax?

For the 2026–27 financial year, the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) may apply if your income is above the relevant threshold and you don’t have eligible private hospital cover.

Depending on your income, the surcharge can be 1%, 1.25% or 1.5%.

If you’re above the threshold, it may be worth comparing the cost of eligible hospital cover with the amount you could pay in MLS at tax time.

Hospital cover won’t always be the cheaper option—but for some people, it could be.

Remember, extras-only cover generally won’t help you avoid the surcharge. If you take out hospital cover partway through the year, you may still pay MLS for the days you weren’t covered.

Check your options now to avoid surprises at next tax time.
