Our case Reubenstein v Wade & Department of Parliamentary Services seems to resulted in a change in government policy where DPS staff are required to get manager approval before posting up in (Twitter, Facebook etc) anything relating to their work. Canberra Times quoted recently "In June last year, independent journalist Marcus Reubenstein commenced defamation and copyright action in the Federal Court of Australia against Parliamentary Researcher Geoffery Wade and the Commonwealth. The move was sparked when Dr Wade claimed that Mr Reubenstein's website was operated by the Chinese Communist Party - a claim he strongly denied. The proceeding was discontinued after a settlement was reached. "

'RIGHTS OF NATURE' NEW RULE AT BLUE MOUNTAINS COUNCIL.

Rights of Nature invites us to see ourselves as part of a living community, not as the only members of a living community.

Our Greens Councillor Brent H***e and Ward 1 and Ward 3 candidates Sarah Redshaw and Kingsley Liu, spoke at last Tuesdays council meeting for the 'Rights of Nature' initiative.

Sarah Redshaw said: "Humans in this age treat the planet as a never ending source of treasures to be pillaged. It has not always been that way. Many societies have recognised the integral place of humans in nature such as our own Indigenous Australians and respected the need for consumption to involve replenishment, living within nature as part of nature. We do not end at our skin but flow over into the world around us...."

The Greens recent campaigns have highlighted the concept. Which on Tuesday night became a commitment by our Local Council to develop a dialogue in the community.

Kingsley Liu has been appealing over recent years for the concept to gain traction previously referring to the "running battles to stop the raising of the Warragamba Dam, construction of an airport near the foot of the Mountains, longwall mining in the Gardens of Stone, dumping of Sydney landfill in the old Bell Quarry... the threats never stop and they are all fought on the grounds of human and corporate rights.

The result will be practical strategies to shift the way we make decisions, to shift the way we see the economy, and change the way we treat nature. Importantly, it will create a shift in the way we see ourselves.

A year after initially moved at a BMCC meeting it is now the first time a Local Council has embed ‘Rights of Nature’ as a keystone concept into its operational practices, planning process and advocacy program.

This is an important initiative, one which will inspire the Blue Mountains community and other Councils and communities around Australia to integrate ecocentric principles into their systems.
