Did you know... the 'rent a room' model of business is in the ATO's sights?

In sharing the costs amongst others, more business owners are running their business as contractors under one roof. This is already popular in the medical industry where doctors hire rooms in clinics for the consultations and the clinic supplies the appointment and payment facilities.

The downside is that if you offer the room but control the contractor - the ATO will see you as an employer and you are liable for payroll tax.

If the contract for the room is a 'sham' trying to avoid this, the penalties under the Fair Work Act are $12,600 for individuals and $63,000 for a company....
