Australia Student Visa Rules Have Changed!
Effective 2 Oct 2026

🔴 Onshore Visa Restriction
Many temporary visa holders, including Visitor visa (subclass 600, 601 & 651), Working holiday visas (Subclass 462/417), Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) & Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482) must now apply for a Student Visa from outside Australia
🔴 Existing Student Visa Holders
Applying for another Student Visa while in Australia is now restricted, unless specific exemption applies.
🔴 Student Visa Dependants
Student visa dependants who wish to become primary Student Visa applicants must apply from outside Australia
🔴 Partner & Dependent Children
New restrictions apply to including family members in Student Visa application. Subsequent entrants are no longer permitted under the new rules
🟢 Exemptions May Apply
Certain student, including eligible PHD student and those progressing to higher AQF qualifications, may qualify for exemptions
📌 Important
Existing Student Visas remain valid. Application lodged before 2 October 2026 continue to be assessed under the previous rules

The Australian Government has outlined new immigration reforms that could affect international students and their future visa options.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 1. Restrictions on bringing family members

Proposed changes would limit the ability of many international students to bring their partners and children to Australia. Certain exceptions are planned.

🎓 2. Stricter rules on changing courses

The Government has announced measures targeting repeated course changes intended to extend a student's stay in Australia.
