Superannuation is not automatically covered by your Will in Australia; instead, it’s managed by your super fund, which decides who receives your death benefit unless you have a valid binding death benefit nomination (BDBN).
A BDBN allows you to legally direct your super to your spouse, children, financial dependants, interdependent partners, or your estate’s legal personal representative. Without it, the fund trustee has discretion over who receives your super, potentially leading to disputes or delays.
Integrating BDBNs with your broader estate plan helps ensure your wishes are carried out and can prevent unintended outcomes.
