Spousal maintenance is financial support paid by one person to their former partner in circumstances where their previous partner is unable to adequately support themselves.

The right to spousal maintenance also exists for those in a defacto or same-sex relationship should they be able to establish that they cannot support themselves and that their ex-spouse has the capacity to meet that need.

The Court has wide discretion when determining spousal maintenance.

A bill to outlaw coercive control has been introduced to the NSW Parliament.

If passed, NSW will become the first Australian state or territory to have a dedicated stand-alone offence of coercive control.

Coercive control is a form of domestic abuse that involves patterns of behaviour that have the cumulative effect of denying victim-survivors their autonomy and independence.

It is heartening to see the numbers of women in law school and the increasing numbers rise through the profession and at the Bar.

Last year Newcastle celebrated when two of our own female members of the bar were appointed to the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.

We celebrate the announcement by the Attorney General that Jayne Jagot has been appointed to the High Court of Australia.

When Jagot J takes up that position it will be the first time in Australian history that the highest Court in the land will have a majority of women deciding on the most complex and important legal questions of our time."
