What is Total and Permanent Disability (TPD)?

TPD insurance provides financial support to people who are unable to return to work because of a serious illness or injury.

Importantly, 'total and permanent disability' does not necessarily mean a person must be permanently bedridden or incapable of all work. The applicable definition and specific criteria vary between superannuation funds and insurers and is determined by the wording of the relevant insurance policy. Many policies assess whether a person is unlikely to return to an occupation they are reasonably suited to on the basis of their individual education, training and experience.
