The short answer: Yes, but only if both parties agree 🤝

Once you exchange, that date (usually 42 days) is a legally binding deadline. Changing it requires a formal request through your conveyancers.

Here is the reality check:

🔸No Obligation: The other side does not have to agree. You are at their mercy.
🔹Delay Penalties: If a buyer delays and the seller agrees, the buyer often faces penalty interest.
🔸The Worst Case: If you can't settle on time, the other side can issue a Notice to Complete, giving you 14 days to wrap up. Defaulting after that means a buyer can lose their 10% deposit, or a seller can be sued.

Bottom line: It is entirely negotiable, but do not count on it. Tell your conveyancer the moment you spot a delay.
