“It never looked like abuse.”
That’s one of the most common things we hear from women experiencing coercive control.

“There was no yelling. No hitting.
But if I made plans, there’d be a fight or a crisis at home. I stopped seeing friends. He read my messages. He needed to know where I was, all the time. He told me I was dramatic. Unstable. Lucky he stayed.”

Coercive control doesn’t always look like violence.
It can be subtle. Strategic and Slow.
It isolates. It undermines. It removes autonomy and all under the guise of love, concern, or protection.

Queensland law now recognises coercive control for what it is: violent. But legal change is only part of the solution community education is just as important.

My firm recently shared a sponsored awareness post in a local mums group. Some applauded the message. Others challenged it. In my eyes, all publicity is good publicity on this topic. Yes it’s confronting, but it drags the issue into the light so we can tackle it head on.

Behind the post we made is a real commitment:

Since I started the firm in 2022 we have donated over 316 hours of free legal support to people in crisis.

I have been volunteering in community legal centres since 2012 and my colleagues do regular pro bono work at community legal centres

We only use carefully vetted referrals partners if we cannot assist someone and recommend trauma informed services.

We never onboard clients unless we are confident we can help

Yes, we are a private law firm.

But this work is not about sales. It’s about safety. If one post helps one woman realise she’s not imagining it and that there is a way forward it’s worth it.

Why Avokah Legal?

Many years ago in a little town on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, our principal solicitor Tayla Kilkeary had finished a family law court appearance.

She had managed to secure a father time with his little boys, both under five, who he had been refused access to for the better part of a year.

Tayla made her way back to her office. Exhausted from a full day in court, but happy with the outcome - she opened her emails and there was a note left by her client. It read "... because of you I get to see my boys again".

And that is why we do what we do.

Tayla has worked in many positions over the years and made a name for herself as a fierce advocate and capable solicitor as well as mentor to many law students. She opened Avokah Legal with ambitions to help as many people as possible - and do it her way. Small town values, big city results.

Tayla has carried a copy of that note for years as a reminder of why she practices family law - and why she opened Avokah Legal.
