‼️GOOD NEWS! Australia’s minimum wage will increase to A$26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026!

What this means for migrants:

1. Higher income

* Migrants working in hospitality, retail, aged care, cleaning, agriculture and other award-covered jobs will receive higher pay.
* Student visa holders, working holiday makers, temporary graduates and permanent residents are all entitled to the same minimum wage protections as Australian citizens.

2. Better ability to cope with living costs

* Higher wages can help migrants pay for rent, groceries, transport and utilities, particularly in expensive cities such as Melbourne and Sydney.
* The Fair Work Commission stated that low-paid workers had experienced a decline in real wages since 2021 and the increase is intended to help address that gap.

3. Reduced wage exploitation

* The increase highlights that visa holders are legally entitled to award wages and minimum wage rates regardless of immigration status.
* Workers who are currently underpaid may be more likely to recognise and challenge wage theft.

Now is the best time to live and work in Australia!

‼️Permanent Migration Program planning levels‼️

On 12 May 2026, the Australian Government announced that the 2026–27 permanent Migration Program (Migration Program) will be set at 185,000 places, with an approximate 70:30 split between the Skilled and Family Programs.

Across both the Skill and Family streams of the permanent Migration Program, the government will prioritise applications from onshore migrants, allocating 129,590 places to migrants already living in Australia, with an additional 300 places allocated to Special Eligibility. The remaining 55,110 offshore places will prioritise high‑skilled migrants that help boost productivity and address Australia’s long‑term skill needs, complementing Australia’s working-age population.

An onshore-focused program will support timely transitions to permanent residency for migrants already living, working and contributing to Australia, and further reduces the program’s impact on Net Overseas Migration (NOM).

What it means:

If you are onshore and your occupation is on the Skilled Occupation List, there are higher chances of being prioritised over offshore applications.

Based on the Administrative Review Tribunal and
Other Legislation Amendment Act 2026, some applications are to be reviewed on the papers.

‘On the papers’ means the ART tribunal member may review and decide your case based solely on the documents submitted by the Department of Home Affairs, your written submissions, your evidence, and any other written materials provided by the parties. There would be no in person appearance or video calls, and no opportunity to speak directly or answer questions face to face. Everything depends on how clearly your case is presented.

The ART now must decide without an oral hearing for temporary visas, such as Student visa (Subclass 500) refusals, as these form a large part of the backlog. Also, it will include the review of decisions related to other temporary visas - this will likely include visitor, work, or other short term visas - details to be provided in the Migration Regulations.

Why is this change implemented?

The Australian government aims to decrease the processing times of ART applications. It will also free up resources for complex cases like protection visas. Additionally, it deters non-genuine applicants by requiring strong written evidence upfront. As a result, genuine students and temporary visa holders will receive quicker outcomes. This approach helps clear the backlog efficiently.
