National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) is a time to learn from our shared histories and reflect on how we each contribute to reconciliation.

This year’s theme, “All In,” reminds us that real change takes action from all of us.

At Hazel Family Law, we recognise the importance of respect, understanding and ongoing learning in our work and in our community.

You don’t have to be married for your relationship to carry legal weight

In Australia, de facto relationships are recognised when you’re living together on a genuine domestic basis but that doesn’t always mean what people think.

From shared finances to the way you live your day-to-day life, the law looks at the whole picture not just whether you’re “official.”

A trauma-informed approach changes how legal representation feels and how it works.

Family law discussions can be overwhelming, particularly for people with experiences of trauma, coercive control or emotional distress.

Trauma-informed legal representation focuses on emotional safety, transparency and respect, helping people participate at a pace that feels manageable.

When clients feel informed and supported, communication improves and resolution becomes more achievable.

There’s no one‑size‑fits‑all approach to property settlements.

In our latest blog, we explain how the law looks at contributions, future needs and overall fairness — whether matters are resolved in court or by agreement.

At Hazel Family Law & Mediation, we guide you through the process with clarity and care.
