Welcome to the October 2026 CLIP Intake 🎉

We are excited to welcome our newest participants to the Criminal Law Internship Program (CLIP).

CLIP was established to provide aspiring criminal lawyers with valuable insight into criminal defence practice through mentorship, hands-on learning opportunities and exposure to the realities of working in criminal law.

We continue to be impressed by the calibre of applications received and are proud to support the next generation of criminal lawyers as they build their knowledge, develop practical skills and gain confidence in the profession.

A Meaningful Outcome | Dignity and Compassion in Sentencing

At Emma Turnbull Lawyers, we believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and compassion, regardless of their circumstances.

Our firm recently represented a longstanding client who received a terminal medical diagnosis while serving a custodial sentence.

In light of our client's rapidly deteriorating health, our team urgently sought leave to appeal the sentence out of time, arguing that the exceptional circumstances warranted reconsideration of the sentence.

Despite opposition to the application, the Court accepted our submissions, granted leave to appeal and resentenced our client to time served.

Shea Grant of Emma Turnbull Lawyers appeared in the matter, helping to secure an outcome that allows our client to spend their remaining days outside a correctional facility, with access to appropriate medical care.

Dignity in death is something everyone deserves.

We are incredibly proud to have assisted our client in achieving this meaningful outcome, and our thoughts are with them and their loved ones during this difficult time.

CASE RESULT | Criminal Damage & Careless Driving

Our client appeared before the Werribee Magistrates’ Court in relation to criminal damage and careless driving charges arising from two separate incidents.

Our defence focused on the client’s personal circumstances, medical evidence, rehabilitation and the circumstances surrounding the offending.

Outcome: a 6-month good behaviour undertaking, with no conviction recorded.

CLIP October Program is underway! ⚖️

Day 3 kicked off with an evidence analysis session, diving into the small details that can make all the difference in a criminal brief.

The first two days were packed with:

- Court attendances
- A barrister panel
- An intervention order session
- Attending client conferences
- A junior lawyer panel

We’re proud to host our October CLIP interns who are an enthusiastic and thoughtful group already making the most of every opportunity.

A special guest session (and our final Q&A with the Directors) still to come this afternoon.
