Criminal law

Did you know that you only have to give your name and address to a police officer? You have the right to remain silent to all other questions or you can say "no comment". If you tell the police you want a lawyer, they can no longer question you until you have spoken to a lawyer or your lawyer arrives.

You also have the right to ask for the police officer's name, rank and ID along with their reasons for wanting to question or arresting you.

Property tip

When buying a home, ensure you have funds ready or your home loan pre-approval in place. Otherwise you are at risk of default damages if you sign and cannot purchase the home.

If not, ensure the sale contract has a "this contract is subject to the purchaser obtaining finance from a bank of their choice within the next 21 days" clause written in.
