"I am happy to have closed this chapter with VicPol, and feel that justice has been served."

Those are the words of Matthew C***s, a career police officer who spent years working his way through the ranks at Victoria Police, and years fighting an organisation that he says failed him when he needed it most.

Matt took mental health leave to clear his head. When he came back, he wasn't allowed to return to operational duties. Instead, he says he was put in an office downstairs, and no one came to check on him. He claims complaints about his own mental health were dismissed, and that counselling was never offered.

"I believe my former employer was still living in the 1970s when it came to staff welfare," he said.

Matt has now reached a confidential settlement with Victoria Police, days before his case was due to go to trial.

His story isn't isolated. Arnold Thomas & Becker is currently pursuing at least 20 separate matters against Victoria Police for injuries caused by bullying and harassment at work.

"All of these allegations appear to show that the culture at Victoria Police is quite rife with this kind of behaviour, particularly among senior staff members," says Senior Associate Shalyn Mathew.

"No one should feel victimised at work. We hope Victoria Police look at their culture and processes, and make real change in this space."

Matt can now move forward. He's spending time with his wife and family, and travelling Australia in their van.

Eight schools across south-west Victoria have been linked to Arnold Thomas & Becker’s ongoing investigations into allegations of historical abuse.

The allegations span several decades and involve former students who claim institutions failed to protect them, recognise warning signs or respond appropriately when concerns were raised.

A significant development this week in the investigation into former Melbourne gynaecologist Simon Gordon: the Medical Board of Australia has referred him to VCAT, alleging professional misconduct.

It follows earlier reporting that he allegedly performed unnecessary and life-altering endometriosis surgeries, including organ removal, on women whose pathology results showed little or no sign of the disease.

A former student of St Robert’s School in Geelong has commenced legal proceedings against Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools over allegations of historical child sexual abuse by the school’s former principal.

Arnold Thomas & Becker lawyer Madison Duffy said the case demonstrates how positions of authority can allegedly be exploited to isolate vulnerable children.

“Schools have a fundamental responsibility to protect the children placed in their care. This includes having effective safeguards, proper supervision and clear avenues through which children can safely report concerning behaviour.”
