Australia’s Migration Numbers Decline – What It Means for You

Australia’s net overseas migration has dropped to its lowest level since 2022, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
📊 Key Highlights:

Australia’s population grew by 1.5%, reaching 27.8 million in the year to December
It has now surpassed 28 million in 2026
Net Overseas Migration (NOM): +301,000 people
Natural increase: 111,500 people (births minus deaths)

This decline reflects a shift in government strategy to bring migration down to around 225,000 per year, focusing more on skilled migration and addressing housing and infrastructure challenges.
👷‍♂️ What does this mean for migrants?

Greater emphasis on skilled workers
Reduced numbers of temporary visa holders and international students
Increased focus on sectors like healthcare, aged care, and construction

⚠️ While the numbers are decreasing, migration remains strong, and opportunities still exist—especially for applicants with in-demand skills.
✅ Planning to migrate to Australia?
Now is the time to strategise carefully and align your application with Australia’s priority occupations.

Australia Migration Program 2026–27 Explained

“Big news for migrants in Australia! The Australian Government has officially announced the 2026–27 Migration Program, and there are some major updates you need to know—especially if you're planning for PR.

📊 OVERVIEW OF 2026–27 PROGRAM

“The total Migration Program remains at 185,000 places, just like last year.

👉 The program continues with a 70% Skilled migration focus and 30% Family migration.

✅ Key highlight:
The Government is prioritising onshore applicants, meaning people already living in Australia will get a big advantage.”

🏠 ONSHORE VS OFFSHORE ALLOCATION

“Out of 185,000 places:

✅ 129,590 places allocated to onshore applicants

🌏 55,110 places for offshore applicants

👉 This means the government wants to give PR pathways faster to people already living, working, and contributing in Australia.”

👨‍💼 SKILLED MIGRATION PROGRAM (Major Focus)

“The Skilled Migration Program dominates with:

✅ 132,240 places (about 71%)

This is aimed at:

Filling skill shortages

Boosting economic productivity

📌 Key sectors include:

Healthcare

IT

Engineering

Construction

Education”

🔹 Key Changes in Skilled Visas

✅ Skilled Independent (Subclass 189)
⬆ Increased to 21,090 places
👉 Great news for highly skilled workers!

✅ Employer-Sponsored Visas
⬆ Increased to 58,040 places
👉 Strong focus on helping workers already employed in Australia transition to PR

✅ State Nominated (Subclass 190)
⬆ Increased to 35,500 places

✅ Regional Visas (Subclass 491)
⬇ Reduced to 14,110 places
👉 Slight decrease but regional pathways still important

✅ Talent & Innovation Visas
⬇ Reduced to 3,500 places
👉 Now focused only on top-tier global talent

👨‍👩‍👧 FAMILY MIGRATION PROGRAM

“The Family Program includes 52,460 places (28%)

👉 Main focus is on partner visas and family reunification.”

Breakdown:

💑 Partner Visa: 41,500 places

👶 Child Visa: 3,500 places

👴 Parent Visa: Reduced to 7,060

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Other Family: 400

👉 Partner and Child visas remain demand-driven, meaning numbers can adjust based on applications.”

⚖️ SPECIAL ELIGIBILITY STREAM

“A small category with 300 places, mainly for:

Former residents returning

Special cases”

📉 IMPACT ON NET OVERSEAS MIGRATION (NOM)

“The government is also trying to control Net Overseas Migration (NOM).

👉 NOM has already dropped by more than 40% since 2023

Because:
✅ Most PR visas are now granted to people already in Australia

This reduces pressure on housing, infrastructure, and population growth.”

🎯 WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

“Here’s what you should take away:

✅ If you are already in Australia → Big advantage
✅ Employer-sponsored pathways are stronger than ever
✅ Highly skilled professions have more opportunities
✅ Family visas remain stable, especially Partner visas

⚠️ However:
Regional visas and parent visas are more limited than before.”

🚀 FINAL THOUGHTS / CTA

“The 2026–27 Migration Program clearly shows one thing:

👉 Australia is prioritising quality over quantity and onshore migrants over offshore applicants.

If you’re planning your PR pathway, now is the time to strategise smartly.”

📢 Partner Visa Update – April 2026

The Department of Home Affairs has released important updates for Partner visa applicants and representatives. If you’re preparing a Partner visa application, here’s what you need to know:

💡 Stronger Evidence Required at Lodgement
Recent reviews show many applications are being lodged with limited evidence. This can delay processing. Make sure your application includes current, comprehensive proof that your relationship is genuine and ongoing.

🪪 Identity Documents
Submit certified copies of passports and birth certificates at the time of application.

❤️ Relationship Evidence
Provide solid, up‑to‑date evidence of your relationship from the start — not later.

🩺 Health & Character
Before completing police checks or health exams, check the latest visa processing times. If delays occur, the Department expects applicants or agents to advise within the required timeframe.

📨 Requests for Information – New Practice
If the Department needs more information, they will give one opportunity to respond.
➡️ Follow‑up requests will NOT routinely be issued.

Staying prepared and submitting a complete application upfront can make a real difference in processing time.
