Welcome to the treasure hunt nobody asked to be a part of. 🕵️

No list of bank accounts.
No record of assets.
No passwords.
And absolutely nobody knows where the original Will is.

Your executor already has enough to deal with without spending weeks playing detective through filing cabinets, old emails and that drawer where you keep “important things”.

A little organisation now can save a LOT of stress later.

Keep a record of your important accounts, assets and digital information, and make sure someone knows where your original estate planning documents are stored.

Because “they’ll figure it out” is not an estate plan. 😅

Estate planning is one of those things many of us know we should think about… but it’s very easy to put off.

Maybe you think you’re too young. Maybe you don’t own enough. Maybe you assume your partner will automatically receive everything, or that your family already knows what you would want.

But in our work, we see the very real consequences when those assumptions don’t match what the law actually provides.

We see the additional stress placed on families who are already grieving because someone passed away without a Will.

We see estates where a substantial portion passes to someone the deceased had lost touch with or no longer had a meaningful relationship with — simply because that is the outcome under the intestacy laws.

And we see situations where the person who was there every day — caring for someone through the final weeks, months or even years of their life — may receive far less than the deceased would likely have wanted, because those wishes were never properly documented.

That’s why estate planning is about much more than deciding who gets what when you die.

It’s about clarity, choice and making things easier for the people you care about. It’s also about putting the right documents in place so that, if there comes a time when you can’t make decisions or manage your affairs yourself, the people you trust have the appropriate authority to help you.

And your estate plan shouldn’t necessarily be something you prepare once and never think about again. Your life changes. Your relationships change. Your estate plan may need to change too.

A little planning now can prevent a great deal of uncertainty later.

Have you been putting yours off — or is it time for a review?

Most people assume that, if something happened to them, their spouse or family could automatically step in and manage their affairs.
That isn’t always the case.

An Enduring Power of Attorney allows you to choose someone you trust to manage your financial and legal affairs - including paying bills, dealing with banks and managing property - if you are unable to do so yourself.

Without one, your family may need to apply to SACAT for someone to be formally appointed.

Planning ahead means the choice remains yours.

If you would like assistance putting an Enduring Power of Attorney in place, contact Peter Fisher Lawyers on (08) 8296 2690.

An Advance Care Directive isn’t just about planning for the worst. It’s about making sure your voice is still heard if there comes a time when you can’t speak for yourself.

It gives the people you trust clarity about what matters to you, what you would want, and who you want making decisions on your behalf.

Because difficult decisions are hard enough without your family having to guess what you would have wanted.

A little planning now can make a difficult time much easier for the people you love.

You don’t need to be wealthy to need a Will.

And you definitely don’t need to be old.

If you’re in your 20s, you might think: What would I even put in a Will? I don’t own a house. I don’t have a huge amount of money.

But estate planning isn’t just about the size of your estate.

You might have savings, a car, investments, personal belongings, digital assets or a pet you adore. You might also have very particular ideas about who you would - and wouldn’t - want to benefit if something happened to you.

And sometimes, having a small estate makes good planning even more important.

If things aren’t properly structured, the cost and administrative work involved in sorting out a relatively modest estate can take a significant chunk out of what you actually leave behind.

A Will gives you the opportunity to make your wishes clear and, importantly, make things easier for the people who have to deal with everything after you’re gone.

Estate planning isn’t something you do because you expect to die.

It’s something you do because life is unpredictable - and because future you will never regret having your affairs in order.

This morning our team laced up our boots and proudly took part in the Walk a Mile in My Boots fundraiser 👣💙

It was a great opportunity to come together, support an important cause and help raise awareness of the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness.

A big thing thank you to everyone who organised the event and to all those who walked along side us. We’re proud to support initiatives that strengthen and care for our community.

Every step makes a difference 💙
