Here’s what you should and should not do if you are arrested.

Don’t forget, our free legal advice line is available if you have have been arrested 24/7 on 1800 595 162.

What you should do -
-Be polite at all times
-Ask why you are being arrested
-Give your name and address
-Ask Police for a phone so you can contact TALS on 1800 595 162
-Voice your concerns with Police if you don’t think you have been treated fairly
-Ask for bail

What you should not do -
-Resist arrest
-Give a statement without advice
-Say you have been treated fairly if you don’t feel that you have

We acknowledge the enduring grief, loss and mistreatment forced upon Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities through the Stolen Generations.

The ongoing impact of these injustices continue today and we stand with our communities recognising that the work is not done.

Recent data released from the Tasmanian Government shows a 34% increase in the Aboriginal prison population compared to a 2% decline in non-Aboriginal people.

TALS CEO Jake Smith said "This data demonstrates the Tasmanian Government is failing Aboriginal people in Tasmania"
