Our Family Law team recently attended the 2026 Hunter Valley Family Law Conference, hosted by the Hunter Valley Family Law Practitioners Association in conjunction with the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia's Newcastle Registry.

The conference brought together judicial officers, barristers and forensic accounting specialists to unpack the issues shaping family law practice right now. Our team gained insights from judicial perspectives on current matters to a court child experts panel and case-focused sessions from the bar.

Staying close to these conversations matters to us. It is one of the ways we make sure the advice we give our clients reflects where the law and the courts are actually heading, not just where they have been.

Thanks to the HVFLPA and everyone involved in putting together a genuinely valuable program.

A recent Family Court decision — Leena & Leena [2024] — confirmed that frozen embryos are treated as property under the Family Law Act, not as persons, and can be divided as part of a property settlement.

In this latest article, it is discussed what this means for separating couples, how clinic consent agreements factor in (and where they fall short), and why a Binding Financial Agreement addressing embryo ownership before you start IVF can save significant heartache later.

What does it take to defend someone in a murder trial? Preparation, passion and knowing exactly how to read a jury.

Our Senior Trial Advocate Manny Conditsis has appeared in seven murder trials over his career, with an acquittal rate of around 90% in Judge and Jury trials.

In this Law Society Journal feature, he opens up about what it really takes to succeed in the courtroom, and why solicitor advocates deserve the same recognition as barristers.

On air with ABC Central Coast Breakfast, our Associate Director Michelle Bromfield spoke with Scott Levi about the largest intergenerational wealth transfer in Australia's history — an estimated $3.5–5.4 trillion set to pass to younger generations over the next two decades.

With more family homes, superannuation and investments in play than ever before, Michelle shared why getting your estate plan right matters now more than ever and why seeing a lawyer who specialises in estate planning (not just a general solicitor) can help avoid costly disputes down the track.

Key takeaways:
✅ Superannuation needs specific documentation in place. It doesn't automatically form part of your estate
✅ "Testamentary capacity" is a medical and legal test
✅ Claims against wills and estates are on the rise. Early planning can help prevent disputes before they start

Four years ago, Kayla Nielsen joined Conditsis Lawyers as a law clerk and receptionist in our Newcastle office. Today, she is a Senior Associate and Associate Director.

Kayla’s story is one of initiative, mentorship, hard work and the kind of supportive environment that allows talented people to grow. Drawn to our ethos and values-driven approach to justice, she hand-delivered her resume while completing her final year of university and working in another legal role.

Since then, she has completed her law degree with First Class Honours, been admitted as a solicitor, built a strong criminal law practice, become Newcastle Criminal Law Team Leader and earned recognition as a 2026 Doyle’s Guide Criminal Law Rising Star, alongside other national award finalist recognitions.

Her remarkable progression, including this month’s double promotion, is also a reminder that a support role can be the beginning of a much bigger legal career when passion, effort and opportunity come together.

Congratulations, Kayla. We are incredibly proud of your well-deserved promotion and excited to see what you achieve in this next chapter. 🎉

This July, we are proud to celebrate an incredible milestone: solicitor Don Henderson marks 50 years of service in the legal profession on the Central Coast.

Admitted as a solicitor in July 1976, Don has spent five decades advising local individuals, families, businesses and retirement village operators. He was among the first solicitors in NSW to become an accredited specialist in local government, planning and environmental law.

Don joined Conditsis Lawyers in 2009, bringing a depth of experience and professional wisdom few can match.

Don’s advice to younger lawyers is simple:

“Don’t be afraid to seek out and absorb the wisdom of people you respect. Develop your ability to empathise with your clients so you can give them the benefit of objective advice within the context of both the law and their lives. And keep learning and exploring, because there is always something new to discover.”

Congratulations, Don, and thank you for 50 remarkable years! 👏

🌟Giving Back to the Next Generation of Lawyers 🌟

Earlier this month we welcomed Annalise into our Newcastle office for a week of work experience.

With a strong interest in criminal law, Annalise spent her time with our Associate Director and Senior Associate in Criminal Law, Kayla Nielsen. Annalise learned about the day-to-day realities of criminal defence work — from how cases are prepared, to how our team supports clients through the legal process and the dedication required to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Annalise is considering a future career in law or criminology, and it was great to see her enthusiasm for the profession. We wish her all the best as she continues exploring her path in the legal industry.

We are always glad to support students taking their first steps toward a career in law.
