Why the New Parent Visa is not good for Migrants

Both the Houses of the parliament recently passed the passed the Bill approving the temporary Parent visa for parents of migrants. The visa was promised by the present Government in 2016 and is likely to be introduced in 2019.

The reasons why one should not apply for this visa are as follows:-
1. The visa has an application charge of $5000 for 3 year visa and $10,000 for 5 year visa which is very high. When you compare this to the present tourist visa for parents you get a 3 year visa with 12 months maximum stay at one time for $140 only. So why should you pay the $5000.
2. Another additional cost is the expense of Health Insurance. While there is no such requirement while being on a tourist visa on this visa you have to have health insurance and the sponsor may be required to give an assurance that any expense will be paid by the sponsor. There are no such requirements in the tourist visas.
3. Thirdly, this visa can only be granted twice in the life time of the applicant. One has really not understood the reason for this restriction but I am sure no one will apply for this visa in the first place.

How will the Government implement this visa:-
1. The Government may plan this visa as a first step towards discouraging parent migration. After this visa is put in place the Government may remove the existing parent migration visas like the Aged Parent Visa, Contributory Parent Visas etc thus ensuring no parents are able to migrate to Australia.

2. They may also remove the parent category from the visitor visa so as to ensure people have no choice but to apply for this visa.

Overall this visa is not what was expected by the migrants and may be a way for the Liberal Party to show to the sizable migrant population that they have fulfilled their promise for introducing a longer visa for the parents.

The timing of having introduced this visa in the election year is also interesting.
