Australia has recorded its largest-ever co***ne seizure after authorities uncovered a staggering 2.7 tonnes of co***ne hidden inside shipping containers at a property in Sydney’s outer west. 🚨
The drugs, with an estimated street value of $816 million, were concealed in underground bunkers beneath false floors inside three shipping containers located on a semirural property in Londonderry.
According to the Australian Federal Police, the quantity seized could have supplied approximately three million street-level drug deals across the country.
The operation resulted in the arrest of two men, aged 21 and 25, who allegedly attempted to flee police during the raid. Both have been charged with possessing a commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border-controlled drug and have been refused bail.
Investigators allege the co***ne was brought into Australia through Midge Point in North Queensland before being transported to Sydney on behalf of an organised crime network. Authorities have not yet identified the criminal syndicate involved, and investigations remain ongoing.
The seizure forms part of Operation Minjiang, a joint investigation between the Australian Federal Police and Queensland Police Service that began after officers discovered 40 kilograms of co***ne near a boat ramp in North Queensland earlier this year.
Law enforcement agencies say the bust highlights the sophisticated methods used by international drug trafficking networks and their willingness to take extreme risks in pursuit of profit. Authorities have vowed to continue working with domestic and international partners to identify everyone involved and disrupt future drug importation attempts.
