Put simply, CGT isn’t a separate tax. It’s the income tax you pay on the profit you make when you sell or dispose of an asset.

This includes things like:
🏠 rental properties
📉 shares
💻 crypto assets.

If you dispose of an asset (meaning, you stop owning it) a CGT event may occur. That’s when you’ll need to report a capital gain or capital loss in your tax return.

Capital gain: will increase the tax you need to pay.

Capital loss: can be used to offset other capital gains you make in the future. This will reduce the tax you need to pay, so don’t forget to report these!

Renting in NSW has changed. Here’s what you need to know about the newly introduced reforms ending no-grounds evictions:

A landlord can now only end a lease with a specific, lawful reason. Landlords can’t end a tenancy without a valid cause.

For most reasons, you must be given supporting documents that show why the lease is ending.

Some notice periods have been extended to give renters more time to find a new home.

If a lease is ended for a specific reason (like renovations), the property cannot be put back on the rental market immediately.

Stronger penalties apply if a lease is ended unlawfully, or if a property is put back on the market when an exclusion period applies.

Planning renos or demos? From next year, we'll trial free household asbestos collection and disposal for 2 years to help reduce illegal dumping and keep people safe.

While the trial makes collection and disposal free, existing NSW asbestos removal requirements still apply, including limits on DIY removal and when a licensed asbestos removalist is required.

Want to buy or hire an e-bike? Look out for compliance and non-compliance tags on e-bikes to know whether they can be used on NSW roads and road-related areas.

Businesses must now prominently and legibly display the following compliance information:
🔴 a red tag for e-bikes which can’t be ridden on the road after 1 March 2029
🟢 a green tag for e-bikes that can be ridden on the road before and after 1 March 2029

• reschedule the appointment

If you receive this email:

🛑 Do not respond
🛑 Do not click any links or open any attachments
🛑 Never enter your myGov sign in details or personal information

🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

Scammers are sending fake messages that say you bought something you didn’t buy and tells you to call a phone number to stop or reverse the payment.

Warning signs to look out for:
🚩 A message about a payment or purchase you don’t recognise.
🚩 A phone number shown clearly with instructions to call if you didn’t make the purchase.
🚩 A high-cost purchase, often $300 or more, to make you worry and call the number.
🚩 Pressure to act quickly before the money is taken from your account.
🚩 If you call the number, the scammer may ask for your bank or card details to give you a refund, or get you to install software so they can control your device and access your accounts.
