With changes to Territory Child Protection laws coming into effect on Monday 31 August 2026, Northern Territory Legal Assistance Forum (NTLAF) has released information for families and communities. NTLAF is the peak peak co-ordination and advisory body for legal assistance services across the NT.

Non-government members of the Northern Territory Justice Policy Partnership (NTJPP) have today notified the NT Government of its decision to suspend further participation for a period of six months, citing a breakdown in genuine dialogue, partnership and shared decision-making.

In a formal letter notifying their position, seven non-government members of the NTJPP comprising of independent justice experts and representatives of Aboriginal community-controlled organisations (ACCOs) called on the NT Government to renew its commitment to shared decision-making, accountability and respect for Aboriginal voices. This coincides with the resignation of two non-government members.

Today, International Literacy Day is celebrated across the continent. Earlier this year NAAJA registered with the fabulous crew at The Indigenous Literacy Foundation to access their Book Supply program. NAAJA now has books that will travel to bush courts for young people to read and even take home if they like them. We also have a supply for visitors to our Darwin City Office. This year's artwork was created by Karrinyarra and Warumpi artist Sharon Wumantajari Naparulla Burns, representing grandmothers and mothers passing on knowledge to the next generation. https://www.ilf.org.au/ild-program

Today, NAAJA welcomed the Federal Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Honourable Malarndirri McCarthy to our Darwin City office to announce a welcome boost to our Throughcare program supporting young people and adults being released from custody and help reduce reoffending rates. The Minister met with NAAJA staff including (from left) CLE co-ordinator James Parfitt, Deputy CEO Matthew Connop, CEO Ben Grimes and Throughcare Manager Jeremy Wong.

In August 1963, two bark petitions were presented to the Australian Parliament. This was a powerful act by the Yolŋu people to have their land rights recognised. For the first time, documents created using First Nations ways of showing connection to Country were formally acknowledged by Parliament.
Today, we honour that legacy and the ongoing fight for justice, recognition and self-determination.
