When I first came to Argentina in January 2001, one peso equalled one US dollar. That was a time of financial crisis for Argentina and the parity between the peso and the US dollar was cut in mid-January 2001. The peso has continued its downward spiral. Today it's 837 pesos for one US dollar. To go shopping for a few groceries, you need a lot of pesos and a rubber band to hold the notes together.

Attended the Red Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral this morning to celebrate the commencement of the Law Term. Usually we are invited to refreshments afterwards but this time it was limited to VIPs. Bishop Richard Umbers, principal celebrant, kindly invited me to accompany him. His exact words: stick with me and they won’t be able to say anything. Had a very enjoyable time.
